To Be Hero X Ep 6 Review: Thunder In The Night

The saga of Yang Cheng the new E-Soul continues. It seems that To Be Hero X will be separated into major “arcs” for each of the heroes in the top 10. And E-Soul chapters will be at least 3 episode, with this one being the 2nd. After saving the kid in the previous episode, Yang Cheng finally became the new E-Soul, and embarked on his journey to herodom. However, his journey isn’t as peaceful as one might think. And damn it, would they stop with shooting people in the head already?

With his identity exposed to Xia Qing, Yang Cheng is worried about the lies that he has told her. But all his worries seems to be misplaced. As Xia Qing is a smart girl and has seen through his clumsy lies long ago. A woman’s intuition isn’t simple after all. Viewers can definitely see that Xia Qing is very interested in Yang Cheng himself, and not just his hero persona. If he was to ask her out, she’d no doubt nod. Furthermore, she seems to have in inkling about who he likes as well, and kept on nudging him with provocations. Unfortunately, Yang Cheng is a top-tier dense boy. He’s so dense even the Granzon’s Black Hole have nothing on his pull. Xia Qing even had to use Shang Chao to provoke him, but still, his reservation still wins out. You can kinda feel Xia Qing’s frustration with his cowardice in romance lol.

However, Yang Cheng’s confident was going up. With thousands of people putting their trust in him, his Trust Value has sky-rocketted. And this is a new sensation for him, as the “tingling” of E-Soul’s power courses through his body. Much more than the superhero power, Yang Cheng’s popularity is more important to him. It’s the first time in his life that he has got this much love, and he’s kinda drunk from it – in the literal sense. He doesn’t really have an agenda of his own, and kinda went along with what his friend Shang Chao planned for him, and just focus on being E-Soul. But of course, nothing comes easy, as he was framed to have orchestrated the kidnapping that made him famous in the first place. It’s obvious that someone bought out those 2 thugs to put the blame on him. And we can see that he suffers from a type of PTSD where his zero Trust Value became a trigger for him. It’s rooted deeply in his psyche and can come out any time, bringing him to the brink of despair.

I think the depiction of Yang Cheng in the series is quite frustrating, and for a good reason. He has had a very harsh life, so he isn’t accustomed to “getting” things and being loved. His reservation towards Xia Qing also explains that since he thought Shang Chao also likes her, and he cannot hope to compare with Shang Chao – who is a rich guy with brains and connections and resources, who is also a good guy! Without E-Soul’s power, Shang Chao outclasses Yang Cheng in all aspect, maybe except in bravery.

This episode also show us a bit of the old E-Soul’s side. It seems he believe that the people will be able to tell the two of them apart, and that his accomplishment is much more significant than Yang Cheng. Since he seems to not harbor any ill-will towards Yang Cheng, but knowing this series, I cannot say anything with absolute certainty. E-Soul has stopped fighting for quite a long time, and is only doing commercials now – kinda like how some retired athletes in real life who has stopped competing and is just endorsing products now. But his careers of over 3 decades is a glorious one. In his pre-series PV, it seems he was the one who stopped the number one Hero – Zero – after he went berserk. This shows that E-Soul is not just for show, and that he is insanely powerful.

However, it is unknown what his current opinion about the E-Soul mantle is. I reckon he hated the suits that keeps treating him like a gold mine and keep running ads and stuff, and that in the previous episode, it seems that he value justice more than clinging onto the mantle of E-Soul. But we will see… because tragedy struck the new E-Soul not long after we were shown how yang Cheng has stolen the majority of E-Soul’s current fanbase.

During a rainy night (of course it’s always raining when shit happens), Shang Chao was murdered by mistake. The assassin thought he was the new E-Soul and shot him in the face. To add more salt to the wound, Yang Cheng and Xia Qing was right nearby when they witnessed their friend’s death. No need ot mention the shock and pain that went through them, as their screams echo in the night. I have to be honest, in the last episode, I thought Shang chao had a hidden agenda that may be more nefarious than just making Yang Cheng a hero. That maybe he just wanted to use the new E-Soul to bring down the old E-Soul to accomplish some sort of plan since he’s the classic rich guy with everything in the world. But after this episode, it seems that he is genuinely a good guy who just want to help his friend achieve success. This is the type of “perfect character” that is either the MC Gary Stu…or the friend who died to become motivation for the actual MC. In this case, it seems like it’s the latter. Yang Cheng has declared that he will challenge the old E-Soul to a duel…probably wanting to become the “true” E-Soul to fulfill Shang Chao’s wishes.

With his entire focus shifting towards training to become E-Soul, it seems he will put everything behind, including Xia Qing, and she is obviously worried about him. This is a pretty common trope, but I expect some master twist in the next episode where the “true’ culprit is revealed. And it would be nice if we get some cameo from other heroes as well.
