Aquarion MoE Ep 5 Review: Omen Of Misfortune

In episode 5 of Aquarion MoE, we finally get the remaining 2 characters of the series, as well as the debut of Aquarion Tir – the Mars equivalent. Well, this episode give focus to Toshi – the reincarnation of Sukuna (lol) – as he get a bit of character development, but more so for the new characters.

Okay so they kinda went bait-and-switch on this one. By showing us glimpse of Sayo like a phantom, briefly brisking through the corridors and all that. They had us thinking that maybe Sayo has come back after getting “ghosted” in the previous episode, but nope – it turns out it is her “twin” younger sister – Hana Ichiki. While looking just like her sister, her demeanor is a polar opposite. She’s very genki and her voice are much more high-pitched, with a hint of devilish in it. We all know that this character will be a problem child from the revelation – as we have seen in the opening – she represented the emotion of “Hatred”. And that’s never a good thing. Also, during the trailer, they really gave her an ominous feeling, as well as hiding her voice actress. I guess they can’t reveal it because her voice actress is the same as Sayo: Konomi Kohara. Once again, kudos to the seiyuu for an excellent portrayal.

Towards the end of the episode, we can kinda see what she brings to the table. She’s cheerful and extrovert on the surface, but hidden beneath is emotions you wouldn’t want to mess with. She almost stabbed Momohime in the neck – which was crazy. And she even proclaimed that she will kill her, which opened another can of worms. I don’t think there’s any relationship this insane in other Aquarions between the Elements – except for I guess Logos (and that one time Mix turned into a guy). This may also be a result of their past lives – so we’ll have to see what happened between the twins and Sedona during the Myth arc.

This episode kinda returns to the spirit of Aquarion with some “mystery” that the Elements explored. Although it’s kinda cliche that they used the “7 school mysteries” type which we’ve seen in many romcom series. At least it has a fun mysterious atmosphere – kinda remind me of EVOL a bit. Toshi is still quite reserved this episode and didn’t have a “break out” moment like Rimiya or Momohime, but I guess we’ll see.

Aquarion Tir looks nice, and the sword is neat too. Toshi’s grunting while fighting is a bit funny though. But the flashback to Sukuna really show us what he was like in his past live. He was the executioner for blasphemers is my guess. The Infinite Conviction Sword is an entirely new thing. We haven’t got a Mugen Sword before in the series, and the way it deployed is really cool. I wonder if it can actually go “infinite” like the punch or just triple in length. Although with Aquarion, anything is possible I guess.
And then, we come to the final character revealed this episode: San. A mysterious character associated with “Birth” in the opening. It’s definitely not an emotion – but rather symbolized something else much greater. The fact that he went into a bathroom, it turned into a girl’s one, then when he exited, it turned into a boy’s. But then, everyone as school called San a “male” transfer student. And he even proclaimed his love for Momohime – and in an insane twist, she accepted. San definitely hold some form of special power related to obedience/destiny. He’s probably an expy of Touma or something, would be pretty crazy if he turns out to be on the hero’s side instead of the Egg Association thingy. But we’ll see.
