Aquarion MoE Ep 6 Review: A Love/Hate Relationship

Oh well…I guess we were off with our predictions last episode, where we kinda misjudged how crazy they are going to go with the characters, especially Hana. This episode focuses on Hana and her “emotion”, as well as learning more about San and the crazy twisted world that is Aquarion Myth of Emotion.

San is a cryptic dude. He seems to command Momohime’s heart without much effort and seems to know things that the Elements don’t. Even the World Council said he belongs to a group of the “awakened” – and also hinted at him not being the only one. The Space Egg Association seems like an organization comprised of people who have “awakened” to the truth of the world. Whatever that is, we’ll learn more later. For the moment, we learned that the truth of awakening lies with the folktale about two lovers who became one. And that the Elements are basically being “groomed” by others for the day of their awakening. I reckon awakening is the process where they regained their memories of their past lives during the Myth Era and ascend to space to fulfill a purpose. Nevertheless, we have 5 episodes left for all this to pan out.

And then we come to Hana – the problem child of the Ichiki family. After a very heart-stopping moment last episode, it’s kinda crazy that they just literally brush it off as a joke. Afterwards, we get the explanation to Hana’s behaviour. Her associated emotion is “Hatred” – which means she currently lacks that emotion. That means she cannot hate anyone just like how Momohime couldn’t “love” anyone. But why would she want to kill Momohime if Hana doesn’t hate her? That’s because Hana perceive killing as a form of expressing “love”. This is truly the craziest explanation to a yandere I’ve ever seen (well, this is Japan we’re talking about so probably not the craziest in their perspective). Basically, if Hana loves someone a lot, she’d want to kill them. Simple, right? Well, before Momohime, Hana really love her sister Sayo – so Hana tried to kill her multiple times. And even caused her to be hospitalized in critical conditions 5 times – which is why the Ichiki family decided to home-schooled her. That’s a very fucked-up and really out-of-pocket explanation. I know Aquarion tend to have people on the quirky side, but Hana is a whole other beast – speaking of beast – Hana’s sense of affection really reminded me of Kagura from Evol. He likes Mikoto and wanted to make her his and his only, but he doesn’t know what love actually means,so he called her “wench” and tried to win her by force. It’s quite different but there’s some similarity here.

On the other hand, if Hana is lacking “hatred” and is confusing ‘love’ and ‘hate’ with each other, she just needs to get in the Aquarion and it will balance her out. Which is what happen in this episode. The Aquarion basically cleared out her emotion and she can actually differentiate between the two, which is kinda crazy since the attack she pulled this episode is one-of-a-kind, even for this franchise. Siegel’s special attack this episode is called Sun Attack Love Hug, where the Siegel charged up to the Mythical Beast…and kissed it. Then, it acted like a tsundere in love, hiding its face and wiggle around like a shy school girl as the monster exploded in the background. It’s definitely one of the scene of all time. I wonder if we’ll get more crazy attacks in the future.
This episode is mostly bad news – as the Mythical Beast was able to plant another stake – forming the “territory” that they need to take over the world. I reckon the World Council will make the Element class do something even more reckless to stop the Beast next time. And according to the nerd teacher, they are building something that can draw out even more power from the Element – and can potentially be dangerous.

This episode’s focus on Hana really turned us on our heads – as our jaws drop when we see a literal yandere in action and the justification the series gave for her. At this point, I can pretty much say that Sayo must have had the most difficult life in this world – with a very tragic end as well. So I guess we can give up the idea of Sayo reviving or reappearing as a ghost etc…, since they seems to want to “kill” her off permanently, which is a shame since I really like the concept of her “emotion”.

One of the highlights this episode is definitely the animation. We get a very cool backpack gun attacks from the Tir, and the combination scene of the Siegel this episode is pretty cool. Although the color-splash is getting a bit too Splatoony for my taste, and I’d really like a combination scene where they just have normal colors instead of the avant-garde splash. And there’s substantially less combat compared to previous Aquarion series, which is also a shame.
