Aquarion MoE Ep 4 Review: Reincarnation Reunion

Episode 4 of Aquarion MoE is kinda…cringe? Although they are trying to force a certain perspective in the first half of the episode, it was super obvious that they’ll subvert the viewers’ expectation later. This might have worked with previous series or people who are completely new to the franchise, but for anyone who have an idea about what Aquarion is, then this is a no-brainer. They spent another episode establishing more character relationships, while giving us very little about the Mythical Beasts and their space.

Let’s get the Mythical Beast stuff out of the way, since there’s very little anyway. So their way of getting control of our world is by placing 15-kilometer triangle to “capture” our land. And they explained that they have already taken a few places, such as the Bermuda Triangle. Well, that is an awful way to capture an entire planet that span millions of kilometers, which would take them ages unless they have an exponential way to do this. Either way, the Feoh failed to stop the first pillar, so now all they can do is try to thwart the 2nd one – which is easy to predict since the 2nd one has to be within 15km of the first one, pretty easy telegraphed attack.

Anyway, this operation failed due to Rimiya unable to control his emotion due to the imbalance introduced by Momohime. So this episode is basically for those two to sort their stuff out. From the info revealed previously before the show air, we know that they are siblings – sisters to match – in their previous life. So if Sylvia and Sirius was an example to go by, you know that these two are never meant to be – and also the promo material clearly wanted to pair Sakko and Momohime, so this episode is basically funny reincarnated siblings shenanigans.

And then Momohime and Rimiya went on a “date”. Well, not like a date in “Rent-a-Girlfriend”, but just a hangout between two “best friends”. This probably the only “true date” in the entire franchise, since the one in Logos is pretty much a weird forced contest. Well, after a day full of lovey-dovey activities, what has to comes, comes. The two lock eyes with each other, and confessed their feelings……….of sisterhood.

The two have an instant flashback to their previous lives where they were sisters, enjoying their time together, as well as discussing their own love life. There are absolutely no romance between the two 12,000 years ago, and certainly there ain’t going to be any now. Anyhoo, the two confirmed their “emotions” and went on their merry ways. Still, this is probably the first time Rimiya has felt any real “emotions” – which is kinda insane since he said he had a girl he liked once, and they broke up a long time ago. Momohime, however, still hasn’t experienced true love just yet, we’ll probably have to wait for her flashback with Sakko more.

After some much needed characterization, we get a “redemption” battle with Feoh. This time, Momohime and Rimiya has got their stuff together and was able to defeat the beast. The special move unleashed by Aquarion is just the silly and insane stuff we saw back in EVOL and Logos. The Aquarion making a heart-sign with its hands is basically Aquarion has been for since the start – nonsensical Hissatsu that only make sense thematically and no practicality at all. Still, the animation is decent. There’s not a lot of hand-to-hand this ep, mostly bow-and-arrow attack much like the original Luna Aquarion in Sousei, so that’s pretty cool.
Overall, this episode gives out more about Rimiya and Momohime’s development, while setting things up for Sakko later. We still only got bits and pieces from the 12,000 years ago, but we’ll prob get more later as it seems to be a very straightforward story. With 1/3 of the series elapsed, we need to start getting to the meat of the story, namely the Whateveritiscalled Egg Space Cult and the Mythical invasion, unless the emotional damage IS the meat itself. Well, in that case, I guess…sure? All in all, we aren’t too impressed with MoE as it hasn’t made a big impact so far. Maybe there’s a twist somewhere down the line that will turn us on our heads.
