Red Sentai Isekai Ep 8: Fan-Service Overload

Episode 8 of Sentai Red Isekai is full of fan-service – and no, not the ecchi kind, but the type Tokusatsu fans can appreciate. With the script written by none other than Toshiki Inoue, the episode is full of Tokusatsu references to Kamen Rider and Super Sentai. And furthermore, Satelight snuck a sneaky cameo in that made us explode with nerdgasm!

Red sit down with Ranya to learn the truth about the elves’ situation as well as revealing some of his own. So we get the gist of things about the “war” that is happening over the Sun forest. A group of human who previously was friendly with the elves suddenly turned hostile when the previous Lord’s son took over. Azir – the current lord – also happened to be Ranya’s childhood friend, which really makes it hard for her to fight against him. But if she doesn’t, the the elves will be massacred.

That’s when Red share a story about his past – with a similar premise. And we get to see Togo in his younger, children day and how he become the Kizuna Red senshi. I really appreciate the anime adaptation since it doesn’t skip any any crucial sequence – and even dedicated this episode to fleshing out more important plot. In the manga, this event is glossed over in 2 panels, but here, we got an entire episode dedicated to it. And in my opinion, it really enriches the viewing experience, as well as manga reader’s perspective since many of them are definitely wondering about how it all went down in his flashback.

Red’s childhood was pretty rough, he lost both of his parents on the same day and basically ended up alone – none of his relatives even took him in. One of Togo’s dad’s friends took him in instead. And I felt that the part where the dad’s friend told him to think of them as his family, and he replied that he couldn’t right now, because his “real” family has just passed away. It’s one of the tropes that anime usually use and most of the time the “child” in question just kinda nodded and be silent. This is one of the few times where the child is emotive and thoughtful enough to give a reply like that. It’s really powerful and shows how sacred blood relation can be. Furthermore, the way the Shindou family dealt with it was also impressive. I like that Kiyohiro is also quick on his feet and said that they can be friends now, and worry about the rest later. Definitely chad behaviour.

Red’s background with his “new” family is explained quite extensively in this episode – which is completely original from the manga. I really like the context it gives the events in the manga. And furthermore, this is basically a reverse Zenkaiser’s Stacey story – where a friend was converted into a villain – kinda like Daiji in Revice as well. This trope has been used quite a lot, but they really put in a more unique spin at the end which is kinda funny. Kiyohiro was actually just jealous of the attention Togo was getting, and not actually hate him as a person deep down.

But the best thing about this episode is no doubt the fanservice, the cameos! We got Kamen Riders and Super Sentais from all ages – and even Toshiki Inoue himself made a cameo with the signature Don Momotaro’s fan. They even get voiced lines! We got Kiji Brother and his wife-to-be, we get the Dekaranger girls, the entire Megaranger team, Changerion, Sasword, Go Busters team and more. Basically, this episode serves double as a fan-service for Toku fans, as well as fans of the Red Sentai isekai in particular – giving more context to Red’s background. The author of the series – who is no-doubt a Toku fan – is definitely very happy about this.

But the cameos don’t stop at just that – Satelight went one-step further for the series by including one of their own series. Yes – a non-Toku series that had nothing to do with Red Sentai Isekai. So the Bansou Killer Robo piloted by Kiyohiro is a dead-ringer for the Aquarion Tir in the currently running Aquarion MoE anime. And when the Bansou Killer Robo was charging the Kizuna Kaiser, a familiar first that extended from the heaven descended…and there it was…the Solar Aquarion. I was absolutely flabbergasted when I see that. Holy shit that was amazing. And while the Aquarion is just there to stop the attack and did practically nothing else, its inclusion really was a highlight of the episode. It shows that bonds can transcend dimension and timeline. The Kizuna Five even said “It feels like something from 12,000 years ago” Now that was kino.

This episode is super fun and interesting, even though it is about Red’s tragic past and his unfortunate conflict with his best friend and brother. We get an episode that is really close to an actual Tokusatsu episode. From the pace the series is going, I think we will end at the next arc – which is the Sun Forest conclusion. I hope the series will get more season since the adaptation quality has been great.
