Mecha-Ude Ep 5 Review: Aki’s Struggle

Once again Mecha-Ude presented us with an episode with no dull moment. Either over-the-top and silly comedy, or heart-wrenching emotional moment, this episode has it all. And we’re getting a new “ally” in this ep, or potentially two? Only time will tell. Furthermore, we got to explore more about Aki’s past with the Worm-type Mecha-Ude.

From the last episode preview and the start of this one, we can confirm that the Worm-type Mecha-Ude user is none other than Aki’s little sister – Fubuki. Of course, Aki, Sinis and Dex jumped at the Worm-type Ude – now revealed to be named Amaryllis – and accused her of orchestrating the entire thing. But it turns out everything was an accident and Amaryllis was trying to protect Fubuki and stop her Arbitrium from going out of control, but failed and it ended up killing everyone there except Fubuki herself. It’s nice to see that Sinis and Dex were originally on each of the sister, and Aki took on Sinis after the incident. Fubuki and Amaryllis was very convincing when they tried to reason with Aki and her Udes, but is Aki right about Amaryllis deceiving them? The hint might lies in Fubuki’s condition.

Fubuki has a condition where she can’t produce Arbitrium and must take it from other Mecha-Ude users. There’s two way this could go: one is Amaryllis is telling truth, which is 50%, the other is she is the one consuming all of Fubuki’s Amaryllis and is taking more from others to satisfy her own. Her nature is a parasitic type that can control other people and made them go berserk. And of course, the way for her to cure Fubuki is the life of Hikaru – as well as the Trigger Arm – Alma. At this point we can say that she has an ulterior motive and is using Aki to do it.

On Hikaru’s side, he’s very infatuated with Aki and is always worry about her. Especially after knowing about her search for the Worm-type, Hikaru is worried that she might be caught up in some suspicious business. And he also misses her flying in through his window (lol he’s def an M). And he also got a very shounen sense of justice where he clearly rejects Aijis and Fist’s way of treating their subordinates – without emotion and compassion. He refused to be that cold-blooded towards Aki and resolved to find her first and protect them from both ARMS, the Kagami and anyone that may harm her.

I like the fact that Jun got absorbed into Shirayama’s antics and he actually believed that coming to a study sesh will help him figure out some secrets about Alma (lol). And Alma is sloooowly but surely turning into Gin-chan with how he’s getting all gung-ho about very mundane thing. Aside from Aki’s quite depressing moment, we get a lot of comic relief from everyone else. Especially the sword dude from Kagami, it seems he’s bit-by-bit getting the secret on how to get stronger with Mech-Ude: by treating them as partner.

Anddd we end the episode on a cliffhanger – a very intense setup indeed. Aki is facing an internal turmoil, choosing between her sister and her close friend. After spending some time with Hikaru everyday, surely she has come to appreciate his company. But the other side is the long-lost sister who she thought was long dead, and the culprit for her family murder that she chased for so many years turned out to be that same sister instead. Aki must be absolutely conflicted right now. But it’s up to Hikaru to snap her out of it and see through the truth.
