To Be Hero X Ep 23 Review: Ahu Is Our Spirit Animal!
As we’re making our way closer to X as a character, we still have one more “hero” to introduce. And this “hero” is closely related to X, and might be the one that interact with him the most in the series to date. But that “hero” is not an ordinary person, heck, that “hero” is not a person at all. Introducing one of our top 10 contender for the Hero Ranking tournament: Ahu the Dog Hero.

The series once again knows how to pull someone’s heart strings by introducing an extremely innocent and likeable character – Xin Ya. Xin Ya is a young girl who is bubbling with positivity and potential, but she was put in a shitty place by fate. She is an orphan that is the sole caretaker of an entire neighborhood of elderly people that is being pestered by gang members from Treeman Group to give up their houses for cheap. Xin Ya is trying to protect the easily-tricked elderly people and their houses. But she is just a small, weak young girl with no wealth, so she had to turn to her childhood hero – Ahu. Ahu used to be a performer dog in a circus, doing incredible tricks on stage, and that’s what captured Xin Ya. She believes he can be a guard dog against the “bad adults”.
But Ahu isn’t a “heroic” dog, well, not yet. Ahu was just much better and more intelligent than your average dog, but he doesn’t want to live being used by humans – including Xin Ya. He probably thought “who is this sassy overly active kid who keep spouting this hero nonsense?”. But as usual, Xin Ya show him care, effort and determination. Gradually, Ahu was moved by Xin Ya’s dedication, but also pissed off by the Treeman gang as well. Since they are pretty much fear zombies, they are quick to resort to violence. And Ahu had enough of these chumps, so he fought back. And of course, he became the hero dog of the district, making both the people and Xin Ya very proud.

Of course, the sunshine and rainbows don’t last very long. The elderly people was tricked once again when Xin Ya and Ahu was absent. So they had to go get the contracts back from them. But in the process, they were detected and Xin Ya asked Ahu to brought the contracts back while she distracted a dozen fear zombies on her own. Ahu ran away but he couldn’t leave Xin Ya alone with those thugs. To be honest, if Ahu didn’t come back, Xin Ya would probably be dead. But luckily, Ahu got some help by none other than Mr. X himself. At this point, Ahu found out about his real identity as a regular salaryman. Still, X snapped his fingers, and the thugs chasing Ahu was flattened in a second.
However, when Ahu ran back to Xin Ya, X didn’t follow, so Ahu had to protect Xin Ya alone. THey were both beaten black and blue and the way the anime portrayed Xin Ya was a very frail and young girl. The art style obviously changed for her character design, opting for a cuter style to emphasis her youth. And of course to make people feel extremely super bad when Xin Ya was hurt severely. But even so, Xin Ya showed bravery deserving that of a hero. And that has inspired Ahu to embrace what Xin Ya wanted him to become – a true hero. Ahu sprung into action, defeating the thugs and even…Nice. Yes, Nice showed up all white and dandy, and was about to let the thugs kill off Xin Ya. It seems my man just keep slipping and slipping. I think this is after the Smile incident so dude just keep falling off more and more. Anyway, when Ahu ripped one of those thugs a new one, some Fear got onto Nice. And he freaked out like a boyband member getting HIV from a one-night-stand. Dude was spazzing out and it looked so hilarious. At this moment, I have no empathy for him anymore, but more for Wreck since he was the oblivious one to Nice’s change.

Afterwards, the neighborhood was saved. Treeman Group pulled back from the deal, and Ahu became a true hero – even ranking higher than Nice in the Top 10. Bro fell off so hard it’s kinda funny. Xin Ya was taken to the hospital and despite suffering heavy injuries, she seems to be fine. Afterwards, Ahu became a normal hero with the agency FOMO. I think Xin Ya can live normally for a while still because FOMO seems to be the most progressive agency in the entire industry. But as always, you can never trust a tech bro – especially one who still associated with the likes of DOS and MG. Ahu only got one episode focused on him, but he basically act as a bridge to introduce X – as the next episode is the finale, and X has the entire episode to himself.
