Gundam GQuuuuuuX Ep 11 Review: Beyond the Zeknova

If you think the last episode was bonkers, wait until this one – where everything came together to unravel the secret of the world, the Zeknovas, as well as “the Rose of Sharon”. Machu and Nyaan finally reunited under some very intense circumstances. Some of our predictions have come true, but the way they happened is certainly not something we can ever fathom.

We won’t be discussing the events of the episode in-depth, because we believe it is something worth experience yourself to feel the events that transpired in this episode. We’d just like to speak about the quality of the episode, and how the staff handle such an execution.

The animation of this episode is great, from the human characters to the 3DCG combat. The fight scenes are very fluid, although they feel more like Eva fighting rather than, you know, UC Gundams. But they looks good, and that’s all that matters. The production value in this episode is quite high, especially in the audio department (if you know what I mean *wink).

The choice of “songs’ in this episode was immaculate. I’m sure the staff was like “yep, that’ll blow their mind for sure” as they close the production on this episode. An absolutely amazing experience that will leave you speechless at the end.

Now, for the story. Ever since we went multiverse in episode 9, the door basically sprung open for all kinds of possibility. And we know how Khara, especially Anno, loves to pay tribute to what he love in his work. And in this one, they absolutely did, in the most unthinkable way possible. They used some very messy plot devices to make it work, but they did it anyway. They basically built on the results back to the cause – a reverse engineering if you could say so. They wanted A to happen, so they have to made B happen, and so on. I think if one view GQuuuuuuX as a fanfic from a big fan made into anime, it’d go down much more easier. Because they are throwing around some really crazy plot devices to make things work. Furthermore, it will also explain the first half featuring lots of returning characters from the original show, only to be shot down in 1 episode.

For Machu and Nyaan, I’m not sure how I feel about them. I am uncertain how they will end up, because of the events in this episode, their relationship is in a state of limbo. I don’t know if they are friends or foes, if they like each other or hate each other. They really need a longggg talk to sort all that out, but I doubt we will have the time for it on screen, so most of that will be “implied” I think. Even so, i am curious on how Khara will handle it.

Finally, the ending. Wow! What a f*cking jokester Khara was, am I right? Playing that kind of music, teasing that kind of silhouette? They’ve succeeded in baiting thousands if not millions of Gundam fans to tune in next week for the insane finale that is GQuuuuuuX. it is a very ambitious move, and it will make or break the series. However, I do not think that Anno or Khara will be too bothered about it. They can afford for this one to fail financially (not that they wanted to, but still). Anno has always been about making things he love, and putting what he love out there for the world to see, kinda like Kojima. He doesn’t care about what others say, since Eva will last long enough for him to live 2 lifetimes even. This Gundam series is basically just another love letter from Anno to an IP that he love and was inspired from.

Despite only having 12 episodes, GQuuuuuuX has made a fair bit of impact on the franchise as well as the fans. This is something that noone has done before and if anyone could, it can only be Khara. Once again they show us their unique way of thinking and how to break tradition. I am very looking forward to the finale – which promise an exciting and incredible climax!
