Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture ep 9 Review: Promise and Resolve

Sakuya now has to face the consequences of her own actions and this is the episode where she pays for her mistakes that have harmed others as well as strengthens her determination and purpose. Besides, Norland is also planning something by letting Narah be the representative for peace negotiations, in addition, we also see the presence of many old faces that have appeared throughout the main and spin-off series in this episode.

In the previous episode and this episode, Ash has gone through all 5 emotional stages of sadness, first he has not accepted the fact that he has forgotten Nichol and thought that Roze is his real brother, until he bursts out in anger when pointing a gun at Sakuya, then he leaves to negotiate with himself and enter a state of depression that even though Sakuya manipulated him, he still chooses to believe her because Jugo- her father believed her. Finally, Ash accepts Sakuya and continues his mission and helps her and the Seven Shining Stars defeat Norland.

In contrast to Ash, who did not waste too much time with his determination, Sakuya experienced a feeling of helplessness when because of her, the Seven Shining Stars and their allies lost too many people, or her hesitation caused the death of 2 people under Christoph and Norland saw through her plan and ability. For the not-yet-mature princess, this was an expensive lesson for her. Fortunately, it only took her more than a day to shock herself and remind herself of the burden she had to bear as well as her determination with it.

Although there are no fighting scenes in this episode, the scene where Ash saves Sakuya and uses Zi-apollo to hold Christoph is really well-invested in terms of color and light. For example, at minute 5:53, the camera angle switches to a close-up of Zi-apollo’s face with broken glass pieces falling down or the scene where Ash kneels down and reaches out to Sakuya, all of those moments can be used as wallpaper or amv.
As for the plot, there were 2 points in this episode that I felt really unsatisfied with even though it didn’t affect the plot much. First was the scene where Ash left in anger but came back later, like he needed time to calm down and sober up and came back to save Sakuya because he promised Jugo and he didn’t seem to leave that building and then 2 people died because of this. Next is Christoph, he escaped in the previous episode only to live for about 5 minutes in this episode, I felt it was quite a waste, and also he quickly went back to his plan to exploit the Geass power without checking if Ash had really left or not and then the scene where he used a gun to commit suicide, honestly this is probably the first time I’ve seen someone get shot in the head and still be able to say a few sentences before actually death lol. Finally, about Sakuya admits to Ash that she’s Roseberry, I was like “really, you really don’t realize how similar those two are”. The scene where Ash is frustrated about not being able to meet Roseberry and Sakuya reveals the truth I was hoping would have been left in the last episode, after everything was over the story would have been better.

In conclusion, preparing for the last Act of Roze of the Recapture, Norland has played his last card, with the mass killing machines he is probably ready to sacrifice Narah too. Besides that, we also see the cameo of old faces to prepare for the final battle of this series. Suzaku and Nunnally at Zilkhstan airport to connect the previous movie of Lelouch, Akito group came to Japan for a trip as promised to go together in their own spin-off, and Oz group too. I appreciate in this series as confirming the story of each character after their own series, what are they doing now and they are still good? All of the above is a fan-service that really important to Code Geass fans.
