To Be Hero X Ep 9 Review: Stray Goddess

We continue with Cyan’s story of…unfortunate luck. After attempting to run away from the orphanage in the last episode, Cyan and Luo are confronted by the principal. The aftermath split Luo and Cyan apart, and if you know To Be Hero X, you know where this is going.

The principal dude stood in the way of the couple, and literally went mask-off in front of Cyan, admitting that he’s only keeping Cyan to build a cult and “mold” Cyan into a hero under his control because his own dream of becoming a hero was dashed. Cyan’s situation is different from the previous two in that she was being groomed from a very young age, unlike the other two who was “roped” into herodom unexpectedly and immediately. Of course this is the last thing Cyan wanted and Luo wanted to save her from that fate.

The two kids didn’t have any offensive ability, but as a certain someone said, luck in itself is totally a superpower. And a runaway truck smashed right through the gate, presenting Cyan with an escape path. However, luck isn’t the only superpower in tow, but also calamity and bad luck. Luo was the unfortunate one, where he stayed behind to hold off the principal so Cyan can escape. I think he already knows that due to his bad luck, he won’t be able to escape this place, but at the very least, he can help Cyan run away. And Luo literally intended to sacrifice himself by drawing the truck towards him and the principal. The principal’s ability was really strong, so he was able to shield the two. But still, Luo was definitely not banking on that but really willing to give his life, or at the very least sustain heavy injuries.

After escaping, Cyan’s Trust Value quickly plummeted, due to the “seemingly” disillusionment of the cult. And she literally left the orphanage without bringing anything with her except her guitar. She was really devastated and was really worried about Luo. However, she realized that she needed to stand on her own two feet so that she may find Luo again. And that’s thanks to a stranger throwing her a coin when she was playing the guitar in the middle of the night. What’s interesting is that stranger’s demeanor and posture was very familiar. The scene where he threw his hand into the air is an almost 1-to-1 replica of none other than the paragon of heroes himself – X. There are some theories saying that X knew who Cyan was and that she would be a necessary hero in the future, so he came to help her out. if so, then this X is not a simple hero after all.

Afterwards, Cyan was able to fend for herself with her talent in music – without depending on her luck at all. It’s kinda ironic that this is basically the only time where she wishes her good luck was working, but it wasn’t. It’s also heart-breaking because she was practically homeless and didn’t even have a change of clothes for quite a while. Still, she is still positive and always smile when playing her favorite music. Her charisma and talent naturally drew people to her, making her experiencing a sense of accomplishment for the first time in her life. But of course, in this universe, happiness never last long…

Her unique personality and talent quickly attract various different type of attention – some aren’t as good as others. her former cultists fond her and began to pray to her in the middle of the street, basically turning her into a spectacle in public that feels realllllly uncomfortable for everyone else and Cyan herself. In addition, Hero Corporations began to take notice – including the news reporter that picked her up originally. It’s kinda crazy that he saw her on the street fending for herself when the last time he saw her was with his trusted friend. The fact that he didn’t really question this fact is really worrying. Adding to the fact that he’s also managing the young heroine Queen, it might be that his original value may have been twisted.
Later on, Cyan was picked up by a hero agency and made into a pop idol x hero. And her rising status means that Cyan is regaining her power – even stronger than before. But of course, our villain principal douche never gave up on her. And he turned Luo against her by whispering something about Cyan to him. I think he’s trying to manipulate him by blaming the death of his parents on Cyan. Since that’s the only connection I can think of that can turn Luo against Cyan. It could be that his parents were on the plane that crashed where Cyan was the only survivor.

At the end of the episode, we see that the entire orphanage has turned into some sort of mind-controlled zombie. And it’s really weird considering Luo’s power is bad luck. However, it could have changed into something else. Even so, the next episode might be another tragic encounter between two people that should have been together side-by-side that were forced to face off against each other. Knowing the series, one of them isn’t walking out of this alive, and we all know who has fortune on their side.
