Shinkalion Change the World Ep 29: Disease Of The Heart

Shinkalion: Change The World is ramping up the drama, and it doesn’t even revolve around the main trio. Morito – despite being a support character – is getting one of the most well-written character arc in the series, surpassing even other Drivers. In this arc, we tackle the very existential issue of the tangibility of the digital world. Are things existing in the digital world “real”? And when something is recreated in the digital world, is it the same as its “real life” counterpart?

First we have to resolve the argument in ep 28 between Ryota, Taisei and Morito. I do think that Morito did blow things out of proportion a bit. But still, it was very significant for him since he has been living his life in the Metaverse with Ido, and Ryota kinda undermined it a bit. Taisei definitely could have been more sensitive, but I guess boys will be boys. But even so, the gang travel all the way to Nagoya to make up with Morito. And contrary to my expectation, the make up was less juvenile and more sensible than I thought. Ryota made a fool out of himself as always, but Taisei and Morito was surprisingly understanding. Morito wasn’t too stubborn and just walked away, but he wasn’t too forgiving either. Morito definitely understood that Taisei was a good guy and he’s genuinely sorry with the other 2, so he let bygones be bygones. But Taisei did bring a peace offering.

A terminal with a pathway to communicate directly with Ido made by Ina. Seriously, is there anything this gal can’t do? If you’ve got Shinkalion trouble, she can solve it. If you’ve got Metaverse issue, she can solve it. If you’ve got confidence issue, you bet she can do something about it by hyping you up. Ina is such a perfect woman if not for her hyper-activeness. But I guess that’s also a charm. Either way, the PDA was an absolute game-changer for Morito, being able to show Ido the outside real world for the first time.

Still, Morito keep refusing the Driver position, stating adamantly that he would like to do nothing but developing his Metaverse. Him sticking to his gun is pretty admirable. But then it turns out to be stubbornness since he got into an argument with Ido about the value of real life object. Ido has always been a traditional chatbot that replies to query, and Morito wasn’t comfortable with him forming new concepts and identities. He wanted Ido to just stay like he was, chatting about old trains stuff and not having any feelings. I think Morito is quite selfish in this aspect since Ido developing his own identity is not bad, and his empathy towards others obsolete stuff like him isn’t bad. But Morito is too involved with the Metaverse so he look at everything from a digital perspective and forego the preciousness of real material. It really amazes me that Morito is such a nuanced character and Ido – who we thought to be just a normal companion bot to develop Morito – is now growing into another character on his own. And then…Ido disappeared in front of Morito.

And of course, the Unknown come. And just like previous Shinkalion debuts, the current team got some trouble dealing with these new Unknowns. While Taisei and Ten struggle to defeat the unknown, Morito decided to join in so he can go back to Ido and apologized. And the Doctor Yellow’s debut is a…surprisingly normal one. Previous Doctor Yellow has been the bulky boi of the line-up, being the shield of the squad. But the CTW Doctor Yellow is roughly the same size as the others, with a pretty basic load out – just one sword. The three of them were able to defeat the Unknown but then something unthinkable happened.

The Unknown turned out to be…Ido. As it fell, Morito caught a glimpse of his best friend, who he had just argued with and planned to apologize to, falling into oblivion. Needless to say he was absolutely shocked to the core. With everyone else having the same reaction. We knew from last episode’s preview that “someone” accessed Ido’s room. It’s probably Reiji and he put him in the Unknown. This 3-ep arc has been amazing, with a cohesive build-up from the starting ep. It’s not just a simple introduction then Shinka debut, but Morito and Ido has received a full-fledged character development arc which we hasn’t seen in the series aside from the main trio. Definitely looking forward to the Double Doctor Yellow in the future!
