Gundam GQuuuuuuX Ep 10 Review: Massacre in space
After a very mind breaking episode last week, this episode of GQuuuuuuX return to the conflict at hand: the unending power struggle between Zeon leaderships. However, it seems that one side will take the win in this episode. We also see the debut of the Eva-01…I mean Gundam GFreD – of course piloted by none other than Nyaan.

Of course, to no-one’s surprise, the Yomagn’tho is a weapon of mass destruction disguised as a “power system” by Zeon, and Zeon will use its power to brought anyone who defy it to heel. We get to see Gihren this episode finally and he is…well…exactly the same as he was in the original, only more docile and naive. It seems that after the war, he suddenly lost interest in pursuing his greed, and just kinda leave things to his subordinate and went to his mansion with his secretary Irene. I can understand his action since Irene got a massive glow-up here, both in terms of looks and personality. She’s much more fanatic as well as “aggressive” towards Gihren’s detractor. But well, the price of getting only 12 episodes rear its head when Gihren and Irene basically was shown on screen for 2 minutes then literally freaking died. Kycilia effortlessly poisoned them in such a simple way that you would think she would have done this much sooner.
Afterwards, Kycilia’s forces went in and cleared off Gihren’s fleet. This is where the GFreD made its debut. I like that Kycilia’s personal guards are very capable MS pilots as well. A squad full of black Gyan led by a white one piloted by Xavier was kinda surreal considering bro got folded every time until he got into the Gyan. But still, a handful of MSes were able to rekt multiple Big Zams in a row was impressive. I really like the choreography of when the Gyan charge straight onto a Big Zam and sped through Gihren’s ship bridge. They really put into perspective how intense space combat can go, and how directions in space can be used for very interesting maneuvers. The GFreD of course was shown to take down a Big Zam on its own while the Gyans had to use formation. It established that the GFreD is on a league of its own with special Newtype gimmick. But here’s where the most interesting exchange in this episode take place.

Both Machu and Nyaan are now basically on opposite side. Challia wanted to kill Kycilia, and Kycilia wanted to take over Zeon. And both Machu and Nyaan are their respective “tools”. Both are fully grown adults with their own schemes, both treat their “tools” extremely well – kinda like their child. This created a bit of a distorted relationship that both sides probably know they are using and being used, but they just went along with it.
Challia told Machu about his Jupiter expedition, where he was put in a situation of certain death, and during that moment, he felt free from the world. No mission, no purpose, no way out. Challia felt it was okay for him to die then and there, because there’s nothing to live for anymore, and there’s no one who will come to his rescue. However, by some stroke of luck, the ship mysteriously reactivated and he was able to get home. The handgun that he brought back with him, which he was seconds away from using on himself, was a symbol of the “freedom” Challia felt during that moment. And now, he bestowed it upon Machu, and in a jokingly manner to boot. That was a very unhinged conversation to have with a teenager.
On Nyaan side, Kycilia was “instructing” her on the meaning of strength. She told her that to achieve what you want, you have to look ahead and just pull the trigger. Do not hesitate, do not get emotional, do not look back. That is Kycilia’s resolve to take over Zeon. I’m sure she had a few fond memories of her family, but now, for her end goal, she is ready to kill everyone that stand in her way. And her tool to do that is Nyaan and the GFreD, so she needs Nyaan to be the same as her – cold and decisive. Kycilia also give her a handgun as a token of her “expectation”. Kycilia wanted Nyaan to be like her – to be able to pull the trigger when the situation calls for it.

It’s kinda insane that by complete coincidence, both Machu and Nyaan now has a handgun as a token of ideology from their mentors – Challia and Kycilia. So you basically know what’s going to happen in the upcoming clash between the two Gundams: it is almost 100% confirmed that Machu and Nyaan will have a stand-off after the Gundam duel.
Now one might say that the two girls haven’t been too fleshed out since the start, since they are just kinda swept along by the adults. But I think that during the their “journeys”, their development has shown through although brief but gradual. Some of their facets are not developed really well, like how Machu is completely disconnected from her mother to an egregious degree, but she is shown to be a very “roll with the dice” type where she kinda adapt to new environment instead of clinging to what she had.
For Nyaan, I think she is definitely the more compelling one out of the two. She was originally a war refugee that lost everyone she ever cared for. Then she was able to find her new “family” – Shuji and Machu, but then they were promptly taken away too. So with Kycilia, Nyaan is clinging on for dear life. She does not want to lose another place where she feel like she belong – even if it is technically a dictatorship that may or may not cause the loss of her original family. Furthermore, she still holds the wish of seeing Shuji again – because he is truly an anchor for her, because he will acknowledge her and do not judge her for who she is and what she do. After all, she used him as a shield, killed someone in front of him and he practically praised her for it.

We also get to see Yomagn’tho activated this episode, because we got no time to waste, baby! We got to go, go, go! The GFreD infiltrated the Solar fortress and interfaced with the system. We also got to see the Doctor and his daughter that was introduced earlier, but of course they are just filler characters whereas the real person of interest is the hentai-looking mc guy named Shirouzu. He very quickly got out of dodge before the GFreD devastated the bridge of the Yomagn’tho , killing both the doctor and his daughter – a very “Char-like” behavior – but we’ll see in the next ep.
It wouldn’t be Gundam without warcrime! And this time, the one who committed it is Nyaan. Following Kycilia’s order, she activated the Yomagn’tho and enacted a Third Imp…I mean Zeknova. Now, the nature of the phenomena isn’t completely understood, but its potential is devastating. The space fortress A Baoa Qu was on the other side of the Earth, but the Yomagn’tho was able to envelope it in the Zeknova, displaced it from its original position, and completely suck it inside the Zeknova and “erased” it from existence. It is unclear if the Zeknova killed them all in that pocket dimension or just simply sent it to another dimension, but as far as this world is concerned, they are all dead. Nyaan has done something irreversible and I don’t think there is a “redemption” for her now. Either she achieved her goal or she will be taken out…by Machu – as the GQuuuuuuX arrive inside the Yomagn’tho to face off against the GFreD.
We have 2 episodes left now to basically sort out all the Zeon shenanigans, as well as putting a cap on Machu’s and Challia’s battle, we also have that totally-not-Char guy to worry about, and the secret that has been bugging everyone since the start: where is Amuro? or is he truly not existed in this timeline? What is the Zeknova really? and what will happen to Lalah after that? All that, in the next 46 minutes.
