Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture ep 10 Review: Return of the Knights

Coming to episode 10, we have witnessed a global human-destruction disaster, Loki – the machines that massacre humanity and are designed to target only “humans” and not only Ash and Sakuya but also the characters from previous Code Geass series also participate in the rescue of the people and destroy these machines. However, that is not enough, Ash and Sakuya also need to defeat Norland to prevent this Global disaster and we also finally see who Norland really is after 9 episodes.

So the last man left unexplored or unexplored by Einberg is dead and worse, Stanley is dead by his own creation – Loki. This is really what I was afraid of when there are so many villains but only 12 episodes to tell the whole story. The studio could have cut the number of villains in half and made them more memorable and good char-dev but instead they chose to create characters and waste their roles. If it was just to create genocidal machines, there would have been no need to create character Stanley, just add that role into Christoph, he was in charge of everything from planning to creating the anti-Geass device, I don’t think adding the role of creating and adjusting Loki would have made much difference and that lead to the only man left on the villain side is Norland (Since Walther betrayed him I don’t think he’ll do anything else unless there’s some plot twist in the finale to tie into the next Code Geass installment that’s been announced)

Next is Norland, we have seen a Full Frontal version of Code Geass. He is a clone created to be a memory container for Charles but after what happened in R2, that did not come true. However, I find it quite difficult to understand this character, why create a clone and let him have his own will and then adopt orphans and train them to do dirty work. He was created and had too many things in his mind, I do not think that if the transfer of Charles’s memories was successful, Norland’s personality and thinking would still be there and would have a significant impact on Charles. However, we also learn that Norland does not see himself as the rest of humanity. His motives are not even any of the typical villain motives, from grand-murder suicide to various philosophical thoughts. To end up simply disgusted with humanity, Norland now turns back to smile slightly but is that his true motive or is it something else?

Besides the fighting scenes of the KMF in this episode, the sword fight scene between Ash and Arnold is equally attractive. Arnold – who has modified his body and depends on machines but in the end still fails once again at the hands of Ash, fails before the experience and flexibility of taking advantage of the surrounding environment, I think this is also a lesson for viewers, instead of depending on machines, hone your own skills and use them smoothly.
Next is the design of Foulbout in the anime, to be honest I feel it is too bulky compared to the surrounding environment in the series, although I have seen the design before but only when watching the anime did I see it like a slow big statue, standing still waving its arms and legs and losing the inherent flexibility of KMF, even its Landspinner Propulsion System is weird. It is designed to be big with 2 wheels on each side and not to mention the wheels use off-road wheels, what a confusing and redundant design.

In conclusion, So Arnold is officially dead, Sakuya has learned the truth about who Norland really is and in this last opening act we also saw Norland’s face in the last seconds. The next episode will definitely be a battle between Ash’s Zi-apollo and Norland’s Foulbout. Let’s see how Zi-apollo will fight a KMF twice its size.
