Red Sentai Isekai Ep 9 & 10: Super Hero Taisen

Here we go! This 2 episode combo features the fateful fight between two powers from the otherworld – the power of Super Sentai versus Kamen Rider. Well, it’s just one of each against each other, so it’s not really a “taisen”, but it is extremely reminiscent of Gokai Red and Decade’s battle years ago.

First we pursue two of Azir’s lackeys. And to save time, the anime cut down on them a lot, both figuratively and literally. Their screentime is super short compared to the manga, and they got defeated super quick to make space for the main event: Azir himself. Using his Privilege magic of manipulating sand, he proved to be quite a match for Amun and Red, and in a masterful play, he was able to “remove” Red from the battlefield temporarily, leaving him alone to fight Ranya. And we also got some flashback about these two’s history together, which is both sweet and tragic.

The two used to be very close friends. With Azir taking the initiative to befriend her per his father’s words. We learned that Ranya was chosen as the successor of Amun from a young age and must undergo training to use that power. That’s a first since a lot of Kamen Riders just power-up through emotions or power of friendship or plot armor, and not many actually “train” in a conventional way. Still, her habit of using masks to “hide” her own emotion have been present back then. But Azir can see through that mask and help her stay true to herself. A human boy and an elf girl together seems like a perfect match for coexistent between the two races – but things didn’t turn out that way. Due to a grave misunderstanding, Azir’s father was killed during a riot by human workers that oppose the elves, and an unmendable rift beginning to form, ending with Azir being manipulated to use the mana seed.

Ranya was defeated by Azir’s magic, and he stole the Amun buckle and medals, and used it to Henshin into Amun himself. Red managed to return to the battlefield only to find Raniya on the ground, and here comes the clash!

Red and Azir began to unleash their abilities. As you know, Tokusatsu like Sentai and Rider are largely dependent on toys, and those toys have very attractive sound effects to capture little kids’ attention – who will get their parents to buy the toys for them. And the same applies here to Red Sentai Isekai since it is literally a sentai parody. This episode has Amun and Kizuna Red spamming their forms, weapons and gimmicks like no tomorrow. You’ll be reminded of Kamen Rider shows where there are A LOT of jingles and sound effects. Well Amun’s sound is the same as decade, so you can imagine it is Super Hero Taisen where Decade was going around spamming his cards to kill all the Riders. Thought the combat is okay, I really wish they put a bit more sakuga into this episode, but the fighting is not too bad. This one would absolutely benefit from a BONES or Mad House style combat.

During the fight, we also get to see the truth about the riot that resulted in Azir’s father’s death. It was kinda obvious that the protesters didn’t want to escalate that much, but “someone”, or rather, “something” – interfered and caused the tragedy.

In the end, Azir was defeated…well, temporarily. On the brink of defeat, he was fully taken over by the Mana Seed and basically fell under its control. We also see the true mastermind behind everything – the demon named Vidal – who pretended to be Azir’s butler to brainwash him and everyone that follows him, turning him against Raniya and the elves. Basically, he will no doubt be put down in the next episodes.

This episode “ended” early to make space for some Kizuna Five content. I think it’s because they want to “pace” the anime so that the ending of the Sun Forest arc will be at episode 12. And making more Kizuna Five content to fill in is the best option. I do believe it is the best. But I’d really prefer to see them fight together instead of some exposition about how the Kizuna Five was formed. Or maybe even show it during combat. The ending of this episode feels like one of those special “lesson episode” that expand on lore with not much action and got little to do with the main plot. I don’t think it’s a bad thing but this episode feel a bit weird at the end in terms of pacing. I hope next week we’ll get a bit more balanced storytelling. And if they decide to do more Kizuna Five, make it explosive and flashy! Like the cameo episode!
