Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture ep 7 Review: Impostor’s Sorrow

Finally the flashback episode has arrived, Sakuya goes digging into Ash’s past while Ash was training the Seven Shining Stars. With the past and the pain Ash went through, after knowing the whole story now, Sakuya has to fix the wrong thing she did to Ash, however it’s not that easy…

About Ash’s past, it was a very dark and painful one, involving many people including Jugo, Narah, Norland and Christoph. About Ash’s past, it was a very dark and painful one, involving many people including Jugo, Narah, Norland and Christoph. A series of days in Lunebelg Manor were not peaceful under Norland, he had to try for Nichol’s part and most of all he had to kill his own heart to be able to complete the assigned assassination mission, I don’t think Arnold could have endured what Ash had to go through at that time unless he was already a psychopath since childhood. Ash was even forced to kill Ruby to ensure his and Nichol’s lives could continue but Nichol did it first and then what had to happen happened Nichol was killed by Norland and then Ash lost the most important thing to him and collapsed. Ash’s anger towards Norland was so great that it caused a part of his hair to suddenly turn white. Hair turns white when it is subjected to extreme stress such as facing torture or death and it takes time for the hair to turn white, but for Ash it happened instantly, meaning at that moment his anger and desire to kill Norland was incomparable.

The villain in this episode is probably Christoph who is the highlight of the episode, from training Ash to be an assassin to stopping Ash from doing something stupid like trying to kill Norland, then finding people who have connections with Ash and Sakuya as well as knowing how to counter Geass. I think more than 50% of Einberg’s strategies or plans without Christoph, Norland would not be able to be like it is now. In contrast to Christoph, to be honest, Norland is a somewhat boring villain to me. He only needs useful people, effective tools, and only accepts yes answers from his subordinates. A masked dictator, I wonder what his past was like that he could have such power and authority, I myself don’t think that with just the ability to terrify others, Norland could climb to the position he has now.

And then the scene we’ve been waiting for for the past 6 episodes, the meeting of Ash and Jugo in prison. Ash, who has lost everything and doesn’t care about anything anymore, meets Jugo, who can die at any moment but is still optimistic in this prison. Even though he was in prison, Jugo did not lose his dignity or his harmony when talking to others, even the prison warden was someone Jugo had helped before, such a respectable man. During the early days of Ash’s imprisonment, Jugo was the only one who talked to himself. It all started when Ash asked for his first cup of coffee and then when Jugo’s execution date was confirmed. Ash told Jugo his story, and after hearing Ash’s story, Jugo advised him to find something else to love, anything and it would give him strength. Although it wasn’t anything big, it was probably what Ash needed to hear right now. Just with those words from Jugo, Ash regained his spirit once again. Even when he was near death he still showed his humor as his least favorite thing was Norland, however what had to come had to come and no matter how hard he tried to escape prison he couldn’t escape and he could only entrust his daughter to Ash.
Sakuya after hearing the whole story, now she blames herself, from the beginning Ash wanted to protect her but she accidentally tied Ash to the curse of Geass, now she can’t continue to be Roze in Ash’s eyes anymore. And by the way I also want to add about the plot hole of this part, Sakuya has been with Ash for 2 years but didn’t really understand Ash’s background, I know she has many other things to worry about but that’s too subjective, as well as the way Sakuya is too dependent on Geass and uses it indiscriminately, I thought this plot hole wouldn’t be revealed until the last minute and this part would be quite boring but luckily there is still Christoph – a necessary character on the villain side to point that out to the viewers.

In conclusion, now that Saukya has been captured, all can rely on is Ash and the Seven Shining Stars. I was also quite surprised by the return of the white-haired Arnold, out of all the people of Einberg who died, I didn’t expect Arnold to survive. Now that we know what the order was that Sakuya used Geass on Ash, I hope it will help Ash activate his power like Suzaku and Akito.
