To Be Hero X Ep 17 Review: The Child and The Beast

And with ep 16, the dedicated episodes for Ghostblade has ended. However, the next hero’s arc is intrinsically tied to him, so we’ll be seeing him again soon. And that’s none other than the Johnnies – who accompanied the team on the spaceship expedition. Well, you might be confused on who is actually the Johnnies – or rather, are. It’s basically to mean Little Johnny – our dorky orange-haired boy, and the cuter-than-marshmallow “pet” – Big Johnny. Despite their cheerful demeanor, their past is anything but.

We got a flashback to a familiar face that we saw in episode 15 – a hero that was killed by Ghostblade – and he was Lil’ Johnny’s father. He is a very powerful and high ranking hero with the power to conjure light energy and heal. Ah Sheng was even an X at one point in his life. But after him being away and his wife got sick and passed away, Ah Sheng was really depressed and do not desire to be a hero anymore. He threw all of his title away and retired from the Association – leaving his best friend – Vortex – to become the next X. He took Lil Johnny to a remote countryside where they can live off the land and enjoy peace without anyone knowing them…

However, life would be boring with just 2, so Ah Sheng brought along a friend for his son – Big Johnny – who was a unicorn-like pet creature that Ah Sheng found in the alien spaceship. He knew that the Association will experiment on him and cause him pain, so he hid Big Johnny and brought him along, after seeing how close his son and Big Johnny get, I think he begins to view the alien as part of the family.

Lil Johnny’s childhoood was probably a mix of happy times and lonely memories. As his father is often away on exploration mission, all he had was his sickly mother reading him the same stories over and over. Even so, there have been plenty of photos and flashbacks that show the three of them enjoying precious moments together. Despite of how busy Ah Sheng was, Johnny certainly didn’t hate him, and love both him and his mom very much. After his mom passed away, Lil Johnny did seem to be very sad, but he was able to recover with the help of the alien creature. Its cute demeanor became a soothing branch of Johnny’s lonely heart. The two grew up together, overcoming the country people’s prejudice and was seemingly enjoying their reclusive life…However, this is To Be Hero X after all…

Disaster strike once more as Ghostblade was sent to kill Ah Sheng because he was marked as a “whistle blower” – which you know is bullshit because he hasn’t done anything damaging to the Association and didn’t really gave information to anyone. Even so, Ghostblade was a “tool” for the Association to kill anyone they don’t like, and he was blindly believing that too – so that’s entirely on him. Afterwards, Lil Johnny and Big Johnny was devastated with sadness and anger, thirsting for vengeance for the person who did this to Ah Sheng.

At that time, Big Johnny went berserk and transformed into a giant monster – much like what he is doing now in “present” time. But in the past, the hero he faced wasn’t Ah Sheng’s real killer – but the X of that time, Ah Sheng’s friend Vortex. We’ll probably get the full backstory in the next ep, but I think Vortex is a decent guy, I really hope he doesn’t bite the bullet in the next one.
