Mecha Profile: Striker Eureka – Pacific Rim

In the world of Pacific Rim, a portal between dimensions appeared in the deep Pacific Ocean. From there, massive creatures known as Kaiju emerged, laying waste to everything on their path. Sensing the threat, the world leaders came together, pulling all resources and developed a new weapon. To fight monsters, they created the monsters of their own, and thus, the Jaegers – titans of steel and slayers of the Kaiju were born. They are giant humanoid mechs so big that it needs at least 2 people to pilot them. Among the Jaegers, the one with highest Kaiju kill count is none other than the defender of the Australian coastline and the first Mark V ever: the Striker Eureka.

I. History:
– Piloted by the father and son duo Hercules and Charles Hansen, Striker Eureka was deployed on November 2, 2019 as the first and, supposed to be, the last Mark V during the final years of the Kaiju War. Designed to defend the Australian coastline, Striker Eureka is the most modern and the best all-around athlete, with its stats completely dominating all sortied Jaegers around that time and is the only Jaeger that earned the most Kaiju kill counts.

– According to the report of the Australian division of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps, over 100 billion dollars have been invested in the construction of Striker Eureka. Throughout the course of its career, Striker is credited with 13 kills prior to 2025, either solo or combined. Following the deterioration of the PPDC’s defense against the Kaiju, with many Jaegers being destroyed faster than they can ever be rebuilt, Striker Eureka is the last Jaeger active among the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. In late 2024, the United Nations decided to cut funding to the Jaeger Program and poured all their finances into the Anti-Kaiju Wall instead. As a result, Striker was decommissioned on December 31, 2024.

– However, the wall is proven to be completely ineffective as Mutavore, a Category 4 Kaiju effortlessly broke through the wall that was deemed “unbreachable by its builders” in less than an hour, forcing Striker to return to action and kill the beast. Nevertheless, the Striker crew was still being forced to transfer to Hong Kong Shatterdome along with 3 other Jaegers: Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha and Gipsy Danger. In the Shatterdome, Marshal Pentecost informed that Striker will be the vital part of his plan to carry a thermo-nuclear warhead and detonate the bomb into the Breach itself, while the 3 Jaegers will be tasked to guard Striker from any incoming attack.

– After Newton Geiszler, a PPDC scientist drifted with a Kaiju brain, this triggered a Double Event with the arrival of 2 Category 4: Otachi and Leatherback. Typhoon, Cherno and Striker are deployed to Victoria Harbor to stop the two monsters, where the former 2 are ordered to defend the Miracle mile while Striker is ordered to remain in position to guard the coastline, as it is the only Jaeger out of the three that the PPDC cannot afford to lose. Yet, the battle goes badly for the Jaegers. Both Typhoon and Cherno are destroyed by Otachi and Leatherback respectively due to their weaknesses exploited by the Kaiju. Unable to sit back and wait, the Hansens disobeyed Pentecost’s orders and rushed forward to beat Otachi, gaining the upper hand with less trouble.

– However, right before Striker can finish the Kaiju off with its missile launcher, Leatherback, having already destroyed Cherno, ambushed Striker and disabled the Jaeger with a wave of EMP. Trapped inside, the Hansens are forced to climb out of their Conn-Pod while Leatherback is circling around Striker. They then fired flares into the beast’s eyes, provoking it. Just as Leatherback is about to smash the Jaegers with its fists, Gipsy Danger, piloted by Raleigh Becket and Mako Mari, has arrived in the nick of time, saving the Striker crew from certain destruction. Later on, both the Kaiju are single handedly killed by Gipsy in separate battles.

– After the intense engagement, Striker is fully repaired and prepped for Operation Pitfall, where both Striker and Gipsy are dropped into the Challenger Deep to destroy the Breach. During the operation, they are confronted by Scunner, Raiju, and Slattern – the first Category 5 ever. The arrival of a Category 5 changed the course of the battle as Striker has to deal with the largest Kaiju ever while Gipsy is ambushed by the remaining two. During the fight, Striker’s hull was compromised despite putting a good resistance against a Kaiju 3 times bigger than its own, while Gipsy lost its right arm from a sneak attack of Raiju and its right leg was crippled by Scunner. Seeing no other way to win, Striker decided to detonate the payload to kill Slattern and Scunner so that Gipsy could have a chance to complete the mission. Although the subsequent explosion instantly vaporized both Striker and Scunner, Slattern somehow survived with critical wounds, but that was more than enough for the Gipsy crew to finish what Striker had started.

II. Features:
– As the strongest and fastest of the Jaegers, Striker’s fighting style is akin to that of a dirty boxer and also the most brutal out of Jaeger force. Its immense strength, speed and agility allow Striker to kill almost every Kaiju faster than any other previous Jaeger series ever produced. This was shown when Striker effortlessly overpowered Mutavore with only 3 sucker punches, easily pummeling Otachi without allowing the Kaiju to resist before lifting and throwing her into the sea. Perhaps Striker’s best feat is capable of fighting Slattern, a category 5 Kaiju despite their size differences and severely harming the latter, forcing it to call for assistance from its fellow Kaiju Scunner.

III. Trivia:
– According to the book “Pacific Rim: Man, Machines and Monsters”, Striker Eureka was initially chosen to be the “Hero Jaeger” of the film, but Guillermo del Toro thought its appearance was “too cold” and “arrogant”.
– Striker Eureka’s body language is modeled after Oakland Raider’s Cornerback, Lester Hayes.
– According to Gullermo del Toro, Striker was “re-colored and colored from gray to cameo green and earth tones” with the Australian outback in mind. Striker was also the very first Jaeger that got the seal of approval from the director.
– In the draft script of Pacific Rim written by Travis Beacham, the role of “most advanced Jaeger” was performed by Tacit Ronin, a Mark II Jaeger as well as one of the two major Jaegers in the original story. After del Toro helmed the seat of the director and changed the initial script, Tacit Ronin was rewritten as a Mark I Jaeger while the role was taken over by Striker.
