Mecha Character Profile: Souma Oogami – Kannazuki no Miko
What does a Super Robot pilot need? A super robot of course, and hot-bloodedness, and a good shouting voice, and most of all – the indomitable spirit to protect justice. The man who has all that quality, along with a selfless heart, is Souma Oogami. He was cursed with a cruel fate, forced to be an Evil God’s servant, but he broke free and became a mighty protector of good and peace, along with his giant Super Robot.

I. Background:
– Souma Oogami is a teenager with a tumultuous past. His family was a broken one, where he and his brother was abused by their father. And one day, his brother attacked the father and they ran away. The two became orphans but Souma was accepted into a temple and came under the care of Kazuki Oogami – the temple’s head priest. He took Kazuki’s surname and lived a relatively normal life until the fateful day when the Evil god Orochi awaken.
– When Orochi awakened, he forcefully turned 8 people into his servants (called Orochi’s Neck) and granted them giant robots to fulfill his ambition before he fully resurrect. Souma was one of them – being summoned as the Seventh Neck of Orochi – and his robot was the Take-no-Yamikazuchi. At the same time, his crush – Himeko Kurusugawa – was also revealed to be the Solar Priestess, Orochi’s destined enemy. When he saw Himeko being threatened, Souma resisted Orochi’s influence and used the Take-no-Yamikazuchi to defend her, defeating another Orochi’s Neck as a result. Afterwards, he vowed to not fall to the hands of evil and will keep defending Himeko to the end.
– The Orochi Necks keep on the attacking, and everytime, Souma fought back against them while resisting Orochi’s influence. Eventually, he was confronted by the First Neck – Tsubasa – who turned out to be his older brother who separated from him while they were little. Tsubasa tried to convince Souma to join him, but Souma remembered his promise to Himeko and resisted, eventually defeating his brother.
– However, resisting Orochi’s control came with a cost, scales began to appear on Souma’s body, and when it fully cover him, he will die. But that didn’t stop him from fighting the Necks to protect the Priestesses. However, the Lunar Priestess – Chikane Himemiya – betrayed Himeko and took control of the Take-no-Yamikazuchi, turning it into a true Orochi’s robot, and stole it from Souma’s control. This devastated Himeko as the two are extremely close. But Souma didn’t waver and he convinced Himeko to stand up once again, and fight to find out the truth.
– Himeko then successfully awakened the Ame-no-Murakumo – the Super Robot that has been Orochi’s nemesis for several lifetimes. Souma then pilot the Ame-no-Murakumo along with Himeko to fight against the fully-awakened Orochi – whose pilot was Chikane. After a psychological battle, Himeko successfully connected with Chikane and learned of her true plan to sacrifice herself for Himeko. The two priestesses united and returned to the Ame-no-Murakumo, preparing to deal the final blow to Orochi.
– Souma then regained control of the Take-no-Yamikazuchi, now upgraded with his brother’s robot’s energy wings. He flew to the Ame-no-Murakumo’s aid and together they unleash all of their power to finish off Orochi, returning peace to the world.

II. Skills & Abilities:
– Souma is a very handsome and athletic boy, to the point he was deemed the male idol of the school he attend. He is usually paired with Himeko – a cool and perfect beauty of the same school, but they never had any feelings for each other. He likes the gentle and easily-embarassed Himeko, and would do anything to protect her. He’s also very understanding and knows how to make Himeko smile and cheer her up.
– After being taken in by Kazuki, Souma trained to be a martial artist, this gives him discipline, endurance and combat skills that he fully utilized to fight against Orochi and his Necks. He was able to resist Orochi’s influence through his head crest and endure the pain from it. During combat, he never stopped fighting no matter how much damage he took.
– His martial arts skills also assist him greatly while he pilot the Take-no-Yamikazuchi. His mecha is humanoid – unlike some other Neck’s mechs – so he can execute moves like a fighter. His battle sense is also very high, able to adapt to different scenarios and use unconventional tactics to fight, sometimes even reckless. Such as when he had to hold both Himeko and Chikane in both hands, so he found a way to unleash a long-range attack using his feet to win the battle. After he received his brother’s sword, he incorporate it into his fighting style, making him even more powerful.
– His strong feelings for Himeko also helped him in battle. When Himeko was in the cockpit of the Take-no-Yamikazuchi with him, he was able to further unlock the mech’s hidden power, increasing its performance significantly and seized victory from what seemingly felt like a hopeless situation. Despite his love for her, in the end he wasn’t able to get ahold of her heart.
– Souma also own a motorcycle despite being a 16-year-old teenager.
