Mecha Profile: MS-07B-3 Gouf Custom

Many people may recognize the famous Zaku II and its green or red color from the Principality of Zeon very well. Although when somehow it turns blue, it’s probably not a Zaku but rather a Gouf – the close quarter combat mobile suit which had its upgraded variant – the Gouf custom.

I. History:
– The Gouf Custom is an upgraded variant over the original Gouf after its limited abilities were shown on the battlefield during the One Year War in U.C. 0079. Because the Gouf was designed specifically for close-quarter combat it has fixed weapons, the Custom variant solved this by including a detachable weapon and better equipped for close quarter shooting. The Gouf Custom was designed to be more flexible, mobility focused and able to jump or leap effectively much like the original but with urban combat in mind, preferably for ace pilots who do not want to ride the heavier Dom mobile suit. It saw action mostly in the One Year War by the Zeon forces with multiples were seen, one of its notable pilot was Norris Packard – who used it to destroy three Guntank mobile suits and damaged 2 Ground Type Gundam in an urban area, proving its effectiveness before being killed by Shiro Amada – the leader of MS 08th Team in his Ez8 Gundam. Some of the remaining Gouf Custom are also used by the Zeon Remnants during its surprise attack in U.C. 0096 during the Laplace Conflict as well.

II. Technical Specs & Armaments:
– With multiple changes over the original Gouf, the Gouf Custom is lighter, more mobility, better armed and better equipped. For instance, the Gouf Custom removed the 75 millimeter five finger machine guns which were deemed ineffective in combat and replaced it with a wrist mounted 3-barrel 35 millimeter machine gun as standard instead which helped increase its safety. In one case such as Norris Packard, the back of Gouf Custom can also install a flare launcher for signaling as well.

– For a ranged weapon, the Gouf Custom features a single 6-barrel 75-millimeter Gatling Gun with high rate of fire due to its cooling system and a synchronized shooting-reloading sequence which is mounted exclusively on its Gatling Shield. Fired by a hand trigger, it can also be ejected when its ammunition were depleted or that the pilot wanted more maneuverability. However, the ranged weapons are changeable as it can also be equipped a standard 120 millimeter Zaku machine gun or a 90 millimeter assault rifle as well as a 3-tube missile launcher on its forearm instead of the 3-barrel machine gun too depending on the pilot needs hence the name Custom.

– When it comes to melee, which is what the Gouf Custom is good at, it still has the iconic Heat Wire – a thick tentacle heat rod that can whip its target that the original Gouf also uses but with a replaced magnetic grappler mounted on a thin cable giving it more range. It can also release a high electrical charge to disable a mobile suit or even use it to hang around buildings, allowing it to perform some kind of surprise attacks if the pilots are skilled enough.

– Not only the Heat Wire – the Gouf Custom also comes with a Heat Sword Type DIII which has longer range over the Zaku’s Heat tomahawk and can cut through targets more than once compared to that, the sword is also stored inside the Gatling Shield. In some cases depending on the pilot – the Gouf Custom can also be equipped with Heat Knuckle on its right forearm for bashing attack with its three spikes on the knuckle plate or a Heat Mace which is a heavy blunt weapon.
