Mecha Character Profile: Anavel Gato – Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memories
When you become a notorious Ace in the Universal Century timeline, people give you nicknames to strike fear into the hearts of enemy. The White Devil, the Red Comet, the Crimson Lightning, the White Wolf and many more. But few sounds badass and intimidating like a certain ace of the Zeon force, who was nicknamed “The Nightmare of Solomon”. It is none other than Anavel Gato – a proud and dedicated pilot who stole a Gundam from the Federation.
I. Background:
– Anavel Gato was born in the Universal Century of U.C. 0058, he fought for the Principality of Zeon’s Space Attack Force under the command of Dozle Zabi during the One Year War in U.C. 0079 as a mobile suit pilot. He gained the status of an ace pilot during the Battle of Solomon where he piloted a Rick Dom and destroyed so many Earth Federation mobile weapons – receiving the nickname “Nightmare of Solomon” and during the closing chapter of the war when Zeon is on the verge of defeat he was convinced to retreat with the space battleship Gwaden under the command of Aiguille Delaz then remained hidden until the right time to fight the Earth Federation again when the time is right.
– Years after the One Year War, Gato spent his time hidden in the moon city — Von Braun and fell in love with an Anaheim’s Electronics staff – Nina Purpleton but later in U.C. 0081 he left her and rejoined the Delaz’s Fleet to prepare for their revenge on the Earth Federation. In U.C. 0083 he came to Earth under the mission to steal Earth Federation’s brand-new GP02 Gundam at Torrington Base in Australia under Operation Stardust — Delaz’s attempt to destabilize Earth Federation Forces using GP02’s nuclear weapon. He succeeded transporting it to space and piloted the GP02 as his main mobile suit, he is recognized by Kou Uraki whom he fought several times, although less experienced than him, he admired Kou’s rapid development and determination.
– His famous act was the time he armed GP02 with a nuclear bazooka and fired at a parading Earth Federation’s space fleet destroying the whole army but later defeated by Kou Uraki exploding both of their mobile suits. Later he was as assigned to pilot a large mobile armor – Neuzuel in which he used to fought Kou and trying to stop Earth Federation Forces from stopping a space colony crashing to Earth as planned by Delaz Fleet – however he died in a suicide attack at Earth Federation’s space fleet near the atmosphere after Delaz’s defeat.

II. Skills & Abilities:
– Gato is an exceptional mobile suit pilot and a very proud and loyal soldier to Zeon – trusting his life under the command of Aiguille Delaz, his experiences and charisma made him suitable for stealing the cutting-edge GP02 Gundam in Operation Stardust. He is also capable of piloting other kinds of mobile suits such as Rick Dom, Gelgoog and the Neu zuel mobile armor. His record at the Battle of Solomon during One Year War was around 200 kills which is also recognized by Earth Federation even in history books.
– Not only piloting mobile suits, he is a very capable soldier – a proud and honorable one, he is also respected as a great military leader and does not fear death itself. Gato sees Earth Federation as the misguided faction that wishes to cleanse the corrupted regime; he is willing to die for the cause to achieve the objective. He also treated Kou Uraki – his rival as equal because of his determined skills. Up until the very end of his life during the suicide mission, he died proudly under the flag of Zeon and its remnants proving his loyalty and determination.

Oh boy it’s definitely not a Zaku! The Gouf Custom is a fine choice for Zeon’s aces that prefer lighter mobile suits for close quarter combat over the mass-produced Zaku II.
