Upcoming Mecha series for 2024

News,  Series News
It’s almost the end of the year…again. 2023 is almost over and honestly – it’s been a decent year. There hasn’t been a consistent stream of mecha series throughout the year, but we’ve got some absolute bangers that really left a deep impression – such as PLUTO, Gridman Universe, Armored Core VI. On the other hand, we also had some very…questionable quality series such as Sen no Kiseki: Northern War, Kyoukai Senki OVA and Gundam Build Metaverse. Nevertheless, this year has been fun. And now we must prepare for what’s coming.

First, the winter season and start of 2024! What better than starting the year with a beautiful girl? A beautiful girl who is also a henshin heroine! Metallic Rouge is an anime series from studio BONES to commemorate their 25th anniversary. With many great series before, like Captain Earth and Star Driver, this one will definitely be worth the wait. The series is basically Cyberpunk meets Ghost in the Shell – with a very vibrant and synth-wave aesthetic. The anime is slated for January 2024.

Next, we’re getting some spicy sequels! The Gundam Seed Freedom movie is one of the most anticipated next season, possibly the entire year. The movie has been over a decade in the making – with rumours of it years ago, and now it’s finally a reality. The movie will take place after Destiny, with Kira, Lacus, Shinn and the gang forming an international peacekeeping organization. However, the smouldering flames of war are still burning, and it looks like Kira will stand at fate’s crossroads once again. The movie will utilize 3DCG mixed with 2D and an updated character design – completely different from Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny. Controversial fandom opinions aside, the movie will surely be a blockbuster. The movie is scheduled to air on January 26th.

Another sequel next season is the TV series Synduality: Noir 2nd cour. After a one-season break, Noir and Kanata will resume their journey to unearth Noir’s memory and discover the key to Histoire. After a pretty relaxing and easygoing first cour, the 2nd cour promises to bring the tension up a notch. Let’s see how Kanata’s harem pans out. The anime is scheduled to air on 8th January 2024.

And we have even more! After being at the helm for Gundam Build Metaverse and Kyoukai Senki OVA, legendary animator and director Masami Obari is partnering up with Cygames to direct an all-new original TV series: Yuuki Bakuhatsu BangBravern. The name is quite suggestive of a Super Robot show however all promo materials point to it being a very down-to-earth militaristic series. But with Obari at the helm, we can expect some Jinki or Ordian-style. Another January release.

Spring season is looking pretty sparse, with only 2 series. But one of them is quite a heavy hitter! Code Geass is back with a new “OVA”: Roze of the Recapture. Freshly announced for next May 2024, the story will follow 2 brothers working as mercenaries. Sounds like Akito? kinda but the design for the KMF is absolutely amazing! The Zi-Apollo is a sexy Knightmare. It is unknown when the series is taking place in the timeline, but I reckon we can get one or two cameos here and there.

The other series is High Speed Etoile. Basically modern Cyber Formula with a girl MC. The series will include many product placement as the anime is sponsored by many companies. It’s very similar to Tiger & Bunny in this aspect. With the “gimmick” that they are introducing, let’s see what they bring to the race course.
Another franchise making a comeback is Grendizer U. And…uh…the UFO Robo is getting some “heavy backing” from the oil magnates in Saudi Arabia. Manga Productions – a subsidiary company of the Misk Foundation formed by the Saudi Crown Prince – has announced that they are sponsoring a reboot of the Dynamic Hero. The staff are packed with veterans like Mitsuo Fukuda (Gundam Seed), Kouhei Kanata (Brave Series, Sakura Taisen), Ichiro Ookouchi (Gundam G-Witch) and Kouichi Sadamoto (Evangelion). The series is announced for 2024, but I am not sure when.

For the gamers, we finally got some good news from Level 5! Their Japanese-only Megaton Musashi will be getting an International release in 2023 under a new title named Megaton Musashi: WIRED. The game will be available for PC through Steam, PS4/PS5 and Nintendo Switch. The game will launch in April 2024 with many crossover collaborations, notably Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Grendizer, and the Super Electric brothers – Voltes V and Combatler V.

We still have A LOT of confirmed mecha series to come, but they haven’t announced their release dates yet, so we haven’t included them. But stay tuned, as we will definitely get more amazing mecha content in the future!
