Upcoming Mecha series for 2025
Well, well, well, look where we are now…the end of 2024. To be honest, this year has been pretty up and down, with more down than up (I guess?). We were extremely excited at the start of the year for the comeback of many series such as Grendizer, Code Geass and Gundam. However, many of the shows this year started up extremely strong but failed to stick the landing – with lackluster conclusion, weird plot development and characterization as well. Even so, we still have many great gems this year such as Gundam Seed Freedom, the Kamen Rider movie, Mecha Ude and Bang Bravern for example. With 2024 ending, let’s look at what 2025 have to offer.
We got quite a few announced series for 2025 including a brand new Gundam tv series!
The new Gundam is called Gundam: GQuuuuuuX (pronounced G-Quarks, with exactly 6us). The series take place in a peaceful colony with 1G gravity. And in this colony, there exists illegal Mobile Suit duels for money – kinda like fight club. In comes our protagonist Amate Yuzurihi – a young girl who is dissatisfied with her current life. Amate run into a girl named Nyaan and got involved in Clan Battle. Taking on the nickname Machu, Amate becomes the pilot of the GQuuuuuuX, and participate in Clan Battles for the clan Pomeranian. But it is a 2-vs-2 duel, and Amate needs a Mav to assist her. That’s where our last protagonist comes in – Shuuji Itou – a graffiti artist wanted by the military police. He becomes Machu’s Mav but even more surprising is that he is the pilot of a mysterious mobile suit called “Gundam”.
The synopsis and discussion around this series is crazy! Especially when it’s a collaboration between Studio Khara and Sunrise – something that has never happened before. Many staff that worked on Evangelion, FLCL, Diebuster, Star Driver and Captain Earth are also joining this project. This shows that Bandai is putting a lot of effort and ambition into GQuuuuuuX. A special cut screening of the first few episodes will be shown in Japanese theatres on 17 January in 2025, so expect the official airing date early next year. This will either be a complete success or a massive letdown – no inbetween! We’re very interested in the series and will make a separate video for it as well.

What’s also surprising is we actually get potentially three Isekai series, which is actually more than average. The first we have the anime adaptation of Sentai Red Isekai de Boukensha ni Naru (The Red Ranger Becomes an Adventurer in Another World), where a Red Senshi of a Sentai got transported to another world after sacrificing his life to defeat the evil boss of his world. Now in an entirely new world with new prevailing evil, Tougo Asagaki – the Kizuna Red Senshi – once again transform to fight for justice and protect the people. The series is basically Metal Hero/Kamen Rider style with Super Sentai tropes since only the Red Senshi was transported. But the team of adventurers from his new world also help him on the way. Most importantly, Tougo can summon the Kizuna Kaiser – the Gattai robot of his Sentai – to aid him in battle. The series will begin in January 2025, kicking off the year for us.
The second one is Ore wa Seikan Kokka no Akutoku Ryoushu! (I’m the Evil Lord of an Intergalactic Empire!) [man these titles is a pain]. The story basically is a power fantasy for young adult where Liam – a protagonist – suffered a horrible life and died, and then reborn as the title said (duh!). Determined to not suffer what he had in his past life, he piloted his giant robot into battle, trusting his space fleet to his maid and basically stomp everyone into submission. While he tries to act like a tyrant, his rule actually bring peace and order to the planets, and his popularity continue to improve. Overall, veryyyy power fantasy, but the trailer has some very good mecha action. The creator of the LN is also the same one with Mobuseka – which had an awful adaptation in terms of animation, so seeing a very good trailer really give us more hope on this one. The series is slated for April 2025.
Last is a very familiar face: Wataru. Yep, we are getting another Wataru – this time with a Gen Z twist. Wataru will be a very tech-savvy kid who likes making videos and taking photos with his selfie stick. The other aspect should be similar to what we already knew from the franchise. And of course, Ryujinmaru is getting more new forms as well, in addition to the 7 forms we got in the previous OVA. The character designs also got a modern artstyle. The series – named Mashin Souzouden Wataru – will start broadcasting on January 12.
For mecha, existing franchise can be powerful – and they can afford many sequels, spin-offs and movies. Just look at Gundam, having a literal empire built on model kits. But some other franchise aren’t as lucky, some are forgotten, and some are barely scraping by. Which is why everyone was surprised when we get another entry in a franchise that hasn’t gotten anything new since 2015. And that is Sousei no Aquarion. Aquarion is getting a new entry called “Myth of Emotion” in January 2025 as well, with designs very reminiscent of the original Aquarion. The last entry – Aquarion Logos – didn’t manage to garner much success since it veered off the usual formula massively. So with MoE (hehe moe), fans of the franchise are hoping for a return to the franchise’s roots that they love so much.
Then we get another surprising return…this time it’s Aldnoah.Zero. Yes, THAT Aldnoah.Zero. With the announcement of the Blu-Ray box, a new episode will be added to the series – called “The Penultimate Truth”. It is unclear if this will take place after the series’ events and serve as the epilogue or will be more of an info digest for gaps in the series. Either way, we won’t be seeing it for quite a while – since the BD Box will be released in March 2025.

That doesn’t mean that’s it for the year. We also got *some* original IP coming on the horizon. First is Miru: Paths to the Future. In the distant future, humans create a robot named MIRU capable of traveling through time, visiting various eras, places, and even parallel worlds. Unlike some robots, MIRU isn’t equipped with weapons. Instead, it helps people overcome immense obstacles peacefully, encouraging new beginnings without violence. MIRU continuously evolves by interacting with people, learning and growing to assist those struggling to survive. It listens to their problems and offers support. By helping others, MIRU sets off a “Butterfly Effect,” of dramatic change guiding society toward a brighter future. The synopsis reminds me of the 2024 movie “The Wild Robot”, and will most likely be quite a sophisticated series, raising many question about conflicts and peace, as well as existentialism, etc… While the main robot isn’t equipped with weapons, other robots and weapons might exist, and we’ll get some type of “action” in the series. The OVA has 5 episodes and is scheduled for April 2025.
Finally, Shinkalion: Change the World will most likely continue long into 2025. The series has been taking a different direction compared to previous Shinkalion animes and it has been very interesting. All in all, we have 8 series waiting for us next year. Mostly focusing on the Winter and Spring season. Let’s see if we get any other announcements for Summer and Fall. But at the moment, that’s what we have to look forward to in 2025!
