Upcoming Mecha series for Summer 2024

News,  Series News
Well, Spring 2024 is almost over…and this season’s been a bit…quiet despite the explosive Gundam Seed Freedom. Since we only have Shinkalion Change The World to watch weekly (Code Geass: Dakkan no Roze is still cinema-only). Thankfully, the upcoming summer season will feature more weekly series for us to follow, with a wide variety of themes and styles as well. So let’s take a look.

We still have an ongoing series, which is Shinkalion Change The World. The series is only currently to episode 11-12, and previous series in the franchise have never been less than 30. So you can expect the series to run at least for another season or so. This series, unlike its predecessors, are aimed at young teens rather than children, so it has an air of maturity with a much more mature storyline.

Another ongoing “series” is Code Geass: Dakkan no Roze. The latest OVA instalments of Code Geass – similar to Akito – is being broadcast in parts in Japan’s cinema. While we weren’t able to catch the series this season, Disney+ Japan will soon have it on streaming. There are still 3 more parts to hit cinema – making a total of 12 regular anime episodes. The first one to hit streaming will be on June 21 and will continue on into the next season.

For sequels, we’re getting the 2nd season of Yoko Taro’s and A-1’s Nier: Automata ver1.1a. After a mixed first season, where the quality and plot is great but the broadcast was riddled with issues, Nier quickly dipped below the radar then slightly resurfaced when the last episodes were aired. But even so, it was a regrettable experience. Hopefully, A-1 has sorted out their production issues for this upcoming season. The 2nd season will air on July 5th.

Next is the return of a legend – the one and only UFO Robot. Following its brother Mazinger and Getter Robo, Grendizer finally got the remake it deserved after decades of sidelining and playing support for the more popular Mazinger and Getter. Funded my Manga Production – a company under the Misk Foundation (owned by a Saudi Arabian prince) – the space Mazinger will make his return in Grendizer U. In charge of producing the series are absolute big guns in the industry, such as Mitsuo Fukuda (Gundam Seed), Ichiro Okoouchi (Gundam G-Witch), Hiroyuki Taiga (Symphogear, Buddy Complex) and Kohei Tanaka (Brave series, Sakura Wars). Truly a passion project from a passionate community in Saudi. Grendizer is one of the few mechas where the overseas fanbase eclipse that of Japan’s. The series will premiere on July 6.

Now with all the traditional fighting series covered, we come to a more….unconventional one. A series where a guy is living a marriage life with a household assistance android. Bokutsuma (full name Boku no Tsuma wa Kanjou ga NaiMy Wife has no emotions) is a drama and slice-of-life series. While there are no wars or alien invasion, the series depict a near future potential where robots, androids and cyborgs alike, start to integrate into society – particularly the Japanese. This is as “real” as real robot get. So we think following this series is a worthy one. The series will begin airing on July 2nd.

That’s about for Summer 2024. With a variety of series, we got adaptations, sequels, remakes with themes of AI in war, AI in peace, alien invasion and pure human conflicts, this season promises to be much more exciting than the previous ones. The targeted audience of the series are varied as well. We got Grendizer U for the classic older gen, we got Code Geass and Nier for the adult fans, Shinkalion for younger fans, and Bokutsuma for…well…anyone who want to get a robot wife (*wink wink). Let’s look forward to another successful season.
