Upcoming Mecha series for Fall 2024

The Summer 2024 season was certainly…something. With Grendizer U shattering our expectation (and maybe not for the better), Code Geass: Roze of the Recapture raising a lot of…controversy, we’re left with only Nier and Shinkalion to hold us up while enjoying some slice of life drama with Boku Tsuma and ATRI. But alas, the current season is heading to an end. And the next one is opening up…and it’s not actually looking too exciting over here.

We’re getting quite few mecha series lately, with only 2-3 series per season, sometimes more thanks to long-running series. A few years back, we’re getting double the amount in a year. But I digress, since quality is definitely better than quantity. And I hope these upcoming series can meet expectation.

As for long-running series, Shinkalion: Change the World will continue airing. We’re not sure how many episodes it will run for but at least it will be in the 30s or 50. The story is aimed at a more mature audience so they might not drag it out as much as the original, unless they want to go the shounen route and explore more aspects of a more teen-oriented plot. Either way, I’m all for it.

Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance

Fuuto Tantei: Skull no Shouzhou

Next is something that is a long-time coming! The original series Mecha-Ude is finally being made into a series, premiering this October 4. Debut as a short ONA a looooong while back, the series present a very interesting concept and premise but has been shelved ever since. Imagine S-cry-ed but only for arms. Characters can summon up different mechanical arms to fight, and their arms are alien entities not unlike those in the series Parasite. The synopsis of the series is as follow:

Long ago, alien lifeforms came to Earth, fusing with people on the planet. Due to their appearance, they were dubbed “Mecha-ude,” as when fused, they bore a striking resemblance to mechanized limbs. Average middle schooler Hikaru Amatsuga formed a reluctant partnership with the Mecha-ude Arma, an extremely rare and special existence even amongst the alien. To protect Arma, the resistance group ARMS assigns the dual Mecha-ude user Aki Murasame to follow him all the time.

However, she is also looking for a mysterious Snake-Type Mecha-ude wielder, who has hurt many of her comrades. Aside from all that, an organization known as the Kagami Group is searching for the mythical “Trigger Arm,” a Mecha-ude said to grant unlimited power. When Aki’s life is threatened by this group, Hikaru and Arma must find the courage to take up arms (pun intended) and fight back. Along the way, learn that his life will never be ordinary again.

Now when you mention mecha, you cannot leave out Gundam (even though we haven’t had any Gundam this year since Seed Freedom). And this season we’re getting something…out of the box. A Netflix 3DCG series will be releasing this October 17th titled “Requiem for Vengeance”. The series is produced by Studio SAFEHOUSE and Bandai Namco Filmworks, and follow similar aesthetic with the MS IGLOO series. The OVA will follow Solari and her Red Wolf Squadron from the Principality of Zeon as they struggle against the Federation’s new Gundam – the Gundam EX. The series will have 6 episodes with 30-minute each.

Another topic we discuss here is Tokusatsu. And even though it’s not worldwide, the Japanese will be getting an awesome anime movie of Fuuto PI (Fuuto Tantei). The Skull’s Portrait (Portrait of S) movie will cover the background story that took place before the Kamen Rider W tv series up until the end of Beginning’s Night. Seeing Kamen Rider Skull on screen voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda will be a great experience. And for manga readers, this will be like a dream come true. The movie will be released November 8th.

That’s about for Fall 2024. We placed our highest hopes on Mecha-Ude as well as Shinkalion. For Gundam: Requiem of Vengeance, we hope that it will exceed our expectation and defy the odds to prove that maybe the West can make Gundam, but we’ll be very conservative about it. Otherwise, we congratulate the Kamen Rider W fans in Japan for being able to see the movie in the cinema. For us, we’ll have to wait a few months for the Bluray.
