Figure Review Transformers Armada – Magna Jet Convoy (OP + Jetfire + Overload)

Continuing from our previous Optimus album, today we are taking a look at, well, another Optimus Prime – but in a predecessor series to Cybertron, which is Armada. Transformers Armada – known in Japan as Micron Densetsu – is the first series in the Unicron trilogy of cartoon/anime, which is a total reboot of the franchise. But of course, Optimus Prime is still his same old Autobot Leader and Jetfire is still his trusted friend. And he also has another companion: Overload. Today we’re taking a look at Hasbro’s Leader Optimus Prime, Voyager Jetfire and Voyager Overload. Since there are 3 bots, we’ll split the review in two parts. The first part, we’ll check out the Autobot leader himself.

2. Design
+ Sculpt & Proportion: Well Optimus is a brick, unironically. Overall, his proportion and sculpt is very accurate to the cartoon with some added mechanical details. But he can only hold a very stiff standing pose so it might be deceiving. His wheels are a tad bigger than the animation but his face is close to perfect. His trailer is also anime accurate and looks very nice. Color-wise, a bit darker tone on the red and blue but overall decent.

3. Build quality
The plastic quality of this kit is very good, and the nubs are easy to handle. However, some nubs are still placed in awkward positions, typically the feet and the sides of the shoulder armor. This kit is separated into parts quite well, although there is still a regrettable point that the thruster parts on the back are not separated into parts. Although the number of decals is not small, they are mainly orange lines on the side armor and ‘Gleipnir II’, so it is unnecessary (the illustration only uses decals on the eyes).

4. Articulation
+ Articulation: Well…not much to say here. In his base form, he is literally a Sentai DX-type. He can bend his elbow just a bit and raise his arms but that’s about it. His leg are extremely limited due to his other combining gimmick. No head, waist or other swivel available. However, in his Super Mode, he gained a bit more articulation. He can spread his leg justtttt a little bit now. And better arm movement as well.

5. Gimmicks and accessories
+ Accessories: He comes with quite a bit actually. First and foremost, the Matrix of Leadership in his chest – which doesn’t look very fancy tbh. His weapons consist of a clear blaster, which can be split into two parts and attached on his fore-arms, and another big cannon which is similar to his G-1 blaster. The juicy bit is definitely the trailer, which comes with a lot of stuff and gimmick inside. Very animation accurate. And of course, it hides a very cool gimmick. Additionally, Optimus also come with his Mini-Con – Sparkplug.
+ Gimmick: Aside from Optimus ability to transform into his truck mode, he can combine with his trailer into a HUGE autoboot. By switching his legs and feet into arms and hands, the trailer into his lower body, Optimus can combine with it and become a whole new Autobot, which is super cool in the cartoon.
What’s more, the Trailer has a special sensor mechanism that allow it to change modes automatically depend on the form your Optimus is in. If you change Optimus into robot mode, the Trailer will flip out into Fortress mode, if you change him to Super mode, the Trailer will auto change into legs, and the same when in vehicle mode. It is a very interesting and badass gimmick that they include.

Magna Jet Convoy review is here! Time to look at Optimus Prime ultimate Armada combination. Someone pointed out to me that Jetfire is in fact a Gigacon-size while the Overload is still Voyager Class. And today we’ll look at both of them as well as their extra thicc combo with OP.
Pretty ironic but Jetfire actually has more articulation than Optimus, despite him not being that “athletic” in the show. He can spread his legs slightly and his shoulders are slightly raisable too. He’s a pretty good figure on his own. His space shuttle mode also looks very good. The color isn’t as bright as the show but at least it’s quite accurate. His head is a bit small compared to his bulky body though. But his main gimmick is to combine with Optimus, and I’d say it nail the look quite nice and the combination sequence too. Would love a bit more bulk on the lower calves to balance out but it’s good enough.
Well, Overload is…just Overload. He doesn’t “do” much on his own in the show. The figure is quite well sculpted with plenty of mechanical details and a very vibrant red color, which is much brighter than Optimus’ tone of red; so he can look a bit more distinct after combining. And oh boi is he a thicc one! And of course he can dock with Optimus in his twin-shoulder-cannon mode and it looks absolutely badass. The bulk really “skew” the perspective and make himlook extremely top-heavy, but hey, noone’s complaining about bigger guns.
There’s a number of ways to combine the 3 figures: Super Optimus with Overload, Optimus with Jetfire, or all three to form Magna Jet Convoy. So you’ll have plenty of fun with them. Not to mention Optimus combination with Jetfire gives them more legroom (literally) to move around. And they looks great in their combination mode too, a bit top-heavy though while in Magna Jet mode since Overload is soooo bulky.

–> Overall: If you like Armada and Optimus in this series, definitely consider getting at least 2 of three figures because getting 2 will boost the playability much more!
