Kit Review: Moderoid Ikaruga

The Ikaruga is the Silhouette Knight of Ernesti Echevalier, his dream creation. It is powered by two Ether Reactors: the Queen’s Coronet and the Behemoth’s Heart. The Silhouette Knight is blue and gold in color, with purple eyes. It possesses flight powers, Strand Type Crystal Tissue, four sub-arms, and 4 swords that can shoot energy. The Ikaruga is the world’s first flying Silhouette Knight
Even though it was released more than 3 years ago, Ikaruga is still one of the most re-released Moderoid models because this is the first model of Ikaruga since its debut in the anime Knight and Magic a few years later.

Moderoid Ikaruga
Series: Knight’s & Magic
Price: 6800 yen
Release date: Dec 2020 (First Release)/Nov 2023(Re-release)

– Design: Ikaruga’s main colour tones are blue and gold. In appearance, Ikaruga has a design similar to samurai warriors with armour parts around the body. On both shoulders are two large blocks of armour, and the side armour is pulled back like the hem of a knight’s skirt. Gold details help it stand out and become more luxurious. Its special feature is that on its back, 4 sub-arms support the use of weapons.

– Build quality: Like other Modeoid models, the plastic quality of this kit is quite soft, and the nubs are easy to handle. Many parts have special under gates with gold-coloured parts. This kit has the main colour parts separated quite well, and the face part has pre-painted eye details. However, it still has many details that lack colour and must be painted (especially the 6 arms, 4 thrusters, and 4 swords). In addition, this kit also comes with decals for details around the body, but I recommend using water decals (sold separately).

– Articulation: Articulation is not an advantage point of this kit. Due to the soft plastic, the joints of this kit are quite strong and tight. The head armour cannot move left or right much because the joint is fixed. Although the two large shoulder joints are quite cumbersome when moving the arm, thanks to the double joint, it can move both sides of the arm better. The waist joint can bend and rotate to both sides.

The hip joint uses a ball joint, causing the leg to sometimes separate during movement. The thigh has a swivel joint, although not much. It helps the leg to rotate better to the side when caught by large armour plates. The knee joint cannot bend deeply. The ankle joint uses a double joint to move flexibly to help it stand better.

– Accessories & Gimmicks: Ikaruga’s main weapons are four Sword Cannons with two blades. They can be opened to be used like a rifle (mechanism similar to Fafner’s Luger Lance). Each saber is attached to a handle to make it more convenient to change hands.

Ikaruga’s special feature is that it has 4 sub-arms on its back with full joints to help it move flexibly (even better than the 2 main arms). These arms can all hold the Sword Cannon firmly). In addition, we have 4 pairs of hands to replace at will.

–> Overall: Moderoid Ikaruga is a model kit to add to your super robot collection, especially for fans of the Knight and Magic series who have been waiting for it after many years of debuting in light novels and anime. Although it has quite a few limitations in terms of articulation, with its super cool samurai knight-style design and interesting sub-arms mechanism, it is still worth experiencing. Thanks to its success, other Silhouette Knights, such as Tzendolg and Toybox, were also chosen to participate in the Moderoid series.
