Kit review: HGCE 1/144 Infinite Justice Gundam Type-II

A modified version of the Infinite Justice Gundam, revised in secret by Erica Simmons at the request of Cagalli Yula Athha. It was originally used to test the abilities of the Cavalier Aifrid support unit. Along with the Strike Freedom Gundam Type-II, this machine returned with Athrun 20 years after the end of Gundam Seed Destiny.
HGCE Infinite Justice Gundam was only released 4 years ago, but this Type-II version has been almost completely renewed.

2. Design
Compared to the original version of Infinite Justice, the visual design of the Type-II version hasn’t changed significantly. However, most parts have been redesigned, similar to the Strike Freedom Type-II. The most noticeable updates are on the head, shoulders, and leg armor. Additionally, the blue line across the chest has been removed. The body proportions of this Type-II version have been refined compared to the previous HGCE Infinite Justice to resemble the model used in the anime more closely. Most notably, the Type-II version replaces the Fatum-01 backpack with the Volantes, featuring an X-wing-like four-wing design (similar to the Ootori pack of Strike Rouge).

3. Build quality
The plastic quality of this kit is very good, and the nubs are easy to handle. If HGCE Mighty Strike Freedom has a gold frame, this kit’s frame will be metallic silver (unlike HGCE Infinite Justice which does not have a glossy coating). This Type-II is also separated into extremely good parts so it only uses a small decal sheet like the previous HGCE Infinite Justice. Runner effect parts H1 and H2 are the only 2 runners that are Type-II reused from the old Infinite Justice.

4. Articulation
Since the original HGCE Infinite Justice already featured a joint system similar to the ‘SEED Action System,’ the Type-II version doesn’t introduce many changes. However, there are some improvements, particularly with the waist joints, which now include more articulated parts. The hip joint retains the same upward-shifting mechanism as the previous HGCE Infinite Justice to support its iconic high-kick poses. Still, the difference lies in the Type-II using a sliding joint at the rear skirt connection instead of a fixed peg. A unique feature exclusive to the Type-II is the use of a rotating joint in the knees, allowing slight knee pivoting to the left and right, though the exact purpose of this mechanism remains unclear (and it’s definitely not for docking inside the Zgok)

5. Gimmicks and accessories
Type-II’s equipment is identical to the old Infinite Justice except for the backpack:
– X2 Sagittus II 20mm CIWS
– X1 High-Energy Beam Rifle
– X2 Beam Saber Acuta Lacerta
– X1 Carrier Beam Shield
– X1 Shining Edge Beam Boomerang
– X1 Grapple Stringer
– X2 Tonitrus Heavy Beam Cutting Leg

This Type-II version introduces two notable new weapons:
– Spitze Schwert Beam Horn: This concealed weapon, located at the top of Infinite Justice Type-II’s head, was used in the final battle of Gundam SEED FREEDOM. Unfortunately, its beam effect is disappointingly short, even shorter than the beam boomerang’s beam effect.

– Volantes Backpack: The new backpack for the Type-II, designed similarly to the Ootori backpack from Strike Rouge, features wings that can fold in or expand into an X-wing formation. Each small wing is equipped with a Beam Riser effect. Additionally, the backpack is outfitted with two High-Energy, Long-Range Beam Cannons and two Agmraam Scorpios

–> Overall: HGCE Infinite Justice Gundam Type-II is worth experiencing, even if you own the original HGCE Infinite Justice. More importantly, this is a must-have for any fan of the Athrun x Cagalli couple. The collection becomes even more impressive if you also manage to get your hands on the HGCE Zgok SEED FREEDOM version and the Cavalier Aifrid, which is set for release Feb next year.
